How to Add Avatar?

I went to my profile and click on the upload avatar button, but nothing happened except that the screen went a bit darker. I tried this several times and it never worked.

So my question is, how does one upload an avatar?

There should be a small pop-up window that opens when the screen goes dark, but sometimes it loads higher up on the screen, so try scrolling up if you don't see it.
