Visiting from San Francisco -- Need some suggestions!

  • 9

Hi there,
I'm heading your way this Wednesday night w/ my GF for a wedding....looking for some suggestions.

Definitely doing Franklin BBQ on Thursday morning (planning on getting there around 10am)....Beyond that, do you have suggestions on a late dinner for Wednesday night, and a Thursday night dinner as well? Hoping to keep it around downtown (so that we can check out some bars afterwards), and have it be a fun atmosphere.

I'm a big-time foodie, but on this trip, we're moreso looking for fun, vibrant places to eat. Not caring for a stuffy, white tablecloth type of dinner, but at the same time, somewhere with great food would be a huge plus.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance!

  1. Have you tried doing a board search for "downtown?" This question comes up about every two weeks on this board, and it doesn't really benefit anyone to keep repeating the same recommendations and diluting the quality of the content here.

    1. Check out La Condesa. Great food - eclectic atmosphere. The ceviche is a must.

Thank you! I've actually heard great things about La Condesa - will go there on Thursday night. As for Wednesday, my only issue is that I don't arrive until 10pm...so I'm wondering if there are any great places open until 11/midnight.

The only place I can think of that's still open at that time of night and is worth anything is the 24 Diner at the intersection of Lamar and 6th. There are other all-night places, but none where the food is better than 3rd rate. Most places close between 10 and 11 on Wednesdays.

For Thursday night, if you're more interested in the atmosphere than in fine food, I'd say go to Vespaio Enoteca on South Congress. It's an Italian restaurant that serves a more rustic style of food than most Italian restaurants; it's really good. If not that, then go to the Shady Grove on Barton Springs Road and get the Airstream chili.

PS: In my opinion, Manuel's on Congress has the best ceviche in town.

      2. For late Wednesday night, you might look at Parkside and Justine's. Parkside is open till 12:30 or so and Justine's till 2am.

          Parkside looks perfect!

        2. Will you be here over the weekend? If so, the 2nd annual sy Picnic will be this Saturday at 11am. i would advise you to come as early as possible, as last year it was terribly crowded by 1pm.

This looks awesome. Unfortunately, the wedding is on Saturday! ugh.

          2. Barley Swine is open until 11, and one can normally get a seat at that hour, though parkside's also great-- especially on Wednesdays when oysters and bubbles are half off. Stuffy and Austin are damn-near antonyms, and almost everywhere is fun.
