Large Group Birthday Dinner

dalmiamo Oct 16, 2011 10:39 AM

It's my 26th birthday next Saturday I am having dinner with a large group of friends.

Right now, the count is up to 7 people but may go up to 12.

I made reservations for Zaytinya, however I know that when it reaches 12 they make you get a special menu and pay $50 per person. I don't know how many of my friends will be willing to pay so much for dinner.

In case it does goes up to 12, does anyone have recommendations of a nice restaurant that will accommodate 12 people in the Chinatown area?

How about Sei or Oya? You still can get the small plates/sushi feel and they can likely accommodate a group that size. Oya also has a $35 pre-fix dinner which is really good. Has a lot to offer a larger group because if there are different tastes in the group (vegetarians for instance) those options are available as well.

Just checked and apparently in small print the $35 pre-fix at Oya is for parties of 8 or less...but I would call to make sure. Still a good option though because the food is more affordable (and good), the environment is celebratory and they have good cocktails. I personally prefer it to Zaytinya.

They also might make an exception if you dine at an off hour, too, since they wouldn't want to turn down that business. It's a great vibe for a birthday and the prix fixe is good because it has lots of non sushi options, too.

If your group goes over 12 and you still really want Zaytinya then just assemble two seperate groups and take them there at the same time. For example just book two reservations each of them for 10 people to accommodate 20 people under different names. I know people that have done this before. Only negative is that you might not be near each other however even if you sit at a table w 20 people it's pretty impossible to speak to all of them.

However if you want something else I agree that Oya would be a great choice. You might also consider Oyamel, Rasika, Asia Nine, or Rosa Mexicano. I've had enjoyable group meals at all of these places.

I strongly disagree with the 50 dollar charge because many people will eat a lot less than that however Zatinya is very popular so they can afford to have policies like that.

Lucky for you Gallery Place/Penn Quarter is packed with places to eat so I'm sure you will not have a problem finding a place.

When you are a group that size, they want you to pay for more than the food. Your meal will typically take much longer than that for a table of four or six, and therefore the opportunity cost for the restaurant is higher than the equivalent number of people in separate parties.

I wonder if you could talk to PS7 and reserve space in the lounge area for a group like that? It's a fun spot, GREAT drinks, solid food, excellent sweets....might be something to consider.
