Oysterfest?

So we are debating a drive out to Wellfleet for oyster fest this week but, having never been before, don't know what to expect. Is there more to do there than just eat oysters? Is it worth the drive from Boston? I love Wellfleet but don't particularly love oysters!

Did you make it to the 'fest? Fabulous weather. I got my oyster fix today on my own, as none of the men in the house (husband, 2 teens) like seafood. Also tried some oyster stew, which was only o.k., but the oysters on the halfshell were great.

Yes we went Sat. afternoon..it was packed and traffic leaving was insane...bumper to bumper to Eastham. Luckily we dined at Sol around 6:30 so the ride back at 9 was easy peasy aside from an oldster poking on Suicide Alley. It was a blustery sunny day..lots of people ...we hit a few galleries...had drinks at Pearl. Had an interesting dinner at Sol. I won't review it here because A. it was their last night of the year and B. it was Oysterfest. I will go back BUT will sit at the bar likely. I think they got better service. It was a mixed night but dining with Ciclista and her sister and my chowhound daughter made it memorable. I will say their Bluefish Pate is sublime.

we got there sat. afternoon, insane traffic.had some raw oysters, amazing,a couple of baked oysters, and a few beers,it was packed but fun.we stayed up in trouro,so we headed north, showered and went to p-town.beautiful weather made walking around great.we had a drink or two then ended up at the squeling pig for a late dinner, good pub food with a great beer list,we'll be back....slept in on sunday, went back to p-town for breakfast,we went to the portuguese bakery for egg sandwiches that were gross, good coffee at wired puppy saved it for us.another beautiful day so we walked around for a few hours, then headed back down to the fest again.had more raw oysters, oyster stew from macs, and a fried lobster tail that awesome, sounded gross ,but was great.watched the shucking contest for a bit, people watched too..headed out by 3 or so,trying to beat the traffic,no luck there....all in all, another great oysterfest, great weather, great times, see you there next year!!!

I recommend going around 10 and leaving around 1....there is plenty of shuttle parking at the beaches with shuttles..or get to the town pier by 9, get breakfast at Sol ( I have hopes that this place will prevail next time )and then hit the street...FUN event..LOVE local food events..now, I see nothing in sight for the Cape for the winter..my next biggee is Xmas Stroll in Chatham..Impudent Oyster and then the Squire for bar...whoooo

I would imagine the traffic is a bummer. We always make a weekend of it. We have rented houses, cottages, apartments, but also stayed on "hotel row" on 6A in Truro for the past few years. Staying north of Wellfleet and venturing in is the way to go: no traffic. The festival is a lot of fun. there is a great varity of food for the non-oyster lover (whoever they are), there are tons of booths with educational information (Mammal Stranding Rescue, Audubon Society, Mass. Lobstermen's Assoc.), jewelers, potters, ceramicists and potters, painters, sculptors, vintners (Truro Vineyards), chocolate makers, knitters, driftwood art, live music, a shuck-off...something for everyone. It's great home town fun. I love it! But is sure is packed. They no longer allow dogs (for the dogs' own safety!). Most people are smart enough not to bring baby carriages. As phelana said, it is the Last Hurrah for many restaurants and that is their closing weekend, so service and food/wine availability can be sketchy at best. Still, it's a blast. We stayed Sunday night, too cuz my sister was jurying an art show in P-town on Monday. We ate at The Squealing Pig and it was great!!!!!

Phelana, Trivia Night at the Squire is the way to go! Tom (bartender) said it is an extremely competitive, full-contact sport! Now we just need to stack our team with some young 'uns because we've got the 70s, 80s, and 90s covered.

It sounds like a blast! I am sorry that I missed it this year but will plan to put it on the calendar early for next year... and maybe make a hotel reservation for that weekend too.

Ha! Funny. We knew each other pre-CH. We are two friends. No love connection, although "ciclista" is both masculine and feminine in Spanish, FYI...
