Indo-Pak (specifically Nihari)?

sundropforever Oct 13, 2011 10:11 AM

The best Pakistani food in the U.S. I've had is from Sabri Nihari on Devon Avenue in Chicago, which is home to many Indian and Pakistani places that are all excellent. The only place that has come close is Tayyabs in Whitechapel, London. There are plenty of acceptable Indian places if chicken tikka masala is your game (which, oftentimes, it is.) I have yet to even see nehari on a menu or any menus that seem to show both Indian and Pakistani influences. I know it's got to be around...but where?! I posted this in the Manhattan board and was directed here... I'm in the LES and would prefer closer to farther, but I'm also not averse to a Zipcar trip, especially if places are open late on weekdays like the Devon shops are.

You'd have to go to Jackson Heights... there are a bunch of places there, including Kebab King. It's an easy ride on the 7 train.

I'll direct you even a bit farther afield. While scouting before dinner in Jersey City, I stopped into Khaja Haleem & Grill ( http://www.khajahaleem.com/ ). It's been open about a month; very clean, lean, almost austere setting. Although I don't see nihari listed online, goat nihari and chicken nihari both appear on my takeout menu. Worth a look next time you take the PATH.

Sunshine (Sun Shine), 69-15 Northern Blvd, Woodside. Open 24 hours. Nice guys, very good nihari, fantastic haleem, fresh breads and surprisingly good samosas.
