High End Wine Store?

  • 6

I'm spending Friday afternoon in Boston before heading up to NH for a reunion weekend. I need to find a special bottle of wine or two before leaving town. I'm staying in Back Bay. Are there any really good wine stores in the area? In particular, looking for a good selection of Rhones.

Thanks!

  1. I can't help you in Boston, but you can look at the NH state store prices and inventories at http://www.liquorandwineoutlets.com/ if you have time to stop during your drive up to NH.

    1. Try Federal Wine & Spirits, at the intersection of Congress and State Streets downtown, opposite the Boston Massacre site and the Old State House. Don't be put off by their small storefront, there is a sizable wine cellar in the basement. Len, the owner, has an encyclopedic knowledge of French wines and their Burgundy selection is superb. (Not as sure about the Rhone selection, but they have always directed me to terrific ones). Their selection of high end Italian wines is phenomenal--Peter seems to know every producer in Italy and he gets stuff no one else has. And if you want high end whiskeys from small distilleries that you will never find in New Hampshire, Joe is your man. The staff is very friendly and helpful to both experts and novices.

Second this - ask for Len or Peter - they are both pretty cool cats.

I'll agree with Federal as one of the best in the area.

But, Back Bay has Bauer Wine and Spirits on Newbury Street and that may be easier for you since you're staying nearby. They do have a good selection of Rhones as a rule. Howie is the guy to see there.

      2. I would suggest Winestone. It is is Chestnut Hill, but they will deliver to Back Bay.
The owner, Patrick Dubsky is a Master Sommelier. I have gotten fantastic Rhones there.
The website is www.winestone.net If you were to call him, I am sure he would be very helpful.

the wine cask in somerville has some good rhones on the shelf. the best deals are in the Chateau Neufs and the Cotes du Rhones though i really like the syrahs.
