Andels has great fish, although it is quite expensive. However, the Bagel Boss on Willis Avenue has great sable. I am not a sable fan, but was in there one day and bought 1/4 lb for my husband, who loves it. I have to say, their sable could make me a sable fan.

OMG... Fairway is HALF the price of Andel's. And probably twice as good!

      Top Notch closed? When?

I grew up in Oceanside; I'm now in NH and would be happy with even a mediocre appetizing store.

I remember when it first opened as Lincoln Appetizing in the 1960's. I learned about the joys of smoked fish from Lincoln.

Oy! What's this world coming to?

I am surprised and saddened to hear that Top Notch closed too. I haven't been in years but I grew up in Baldwin but we moved to NJ in 1983 and I used to go there with my father on Sundays to pick up the appetizing. Oh how I loved their baked salmon salad...

I work right near this place on Roslyn Rd. in Roslyn Hts. Never been inside but per their website I think they have what you want. http://www.andels.com/ordereze/defaul...

way way overpriced-they don't even put prices on the items-just sticker shock when you get the bill

Fairway is very good for sable and all smoked fish; for a great deal head over to Queens at Rego Smoked Fish in Middle Village, about $22/lb for sable.

I think Fairway's appetizing counter in Plainview has it. They also have pre-packaged, but I didn't like it. I think Bagel Boss usually has good appetizing, too. Gold and Meyer's in Plainview did last time I was there, but it's been a while.

I was in Bagel Boss (Hicksville) last night. They do awesome smoked fish and they have the Sable. The only rub is that it sells for $40/lb.
