Slow running

For a number of weeks, I've experienced a considerable slow-down in the board's running - page changes taking several seconds, making enjoyment of the site impossible. It's a daily occurance happening between, approx, 18.00 and 22.00 BST.

I can only assume that this is something specific to Chowhound as other sites, including other US-based ones, appear unaffected. I'm working on IE9. Any thoughts?

    1. Beyond the normal recommendation from those of us having given up IE in any version to run Firefox or Chrome (g) do you run a good system "crap" purger like CCleaner? It really clears up any sluggishness in my system when my various cache detritus conditions have slowed things down...

Yes, I run CCleaner regularly - not that I'd expect it to fix a problem affecting only one site.

Although It does seem to "improve" the running of CH more than any others...I don't find CH to be running slowly on the left hand coast here in the Colony's of late. Have you tried using FF or Chrome and seeing if that affects your performance? It might be worth the very little effort it takes to download one or the other.

      2. Dead bodies move faster than Chowhound tonight.

It took three tries to add a report because it hung. There is something weird going on with adding photos. Each photo adds a new blank "browse" button. I'd do a screen shot but I don't have another half hour ... seriously ... to upload photos.

        1. Harters, that's a semi-regular occurrence for me here in France. I agree -- it's CH only -- and from what I've seen when I watch, it appears to be related to the tweet/like/share widget on the left...when it's slow to load on a page, the whole thing just turns to mud.

I'm running Firefox, so it's not an IE-only issue -- maybe it's somehow related to our location? RWOrange, are you still in Guatemala, or are you back stateside (I know you've posted a few times from the US, but I don't know if you're home permanently or just for a visit)

Originally I wondered whether it might have been because I was in Europe. Another board I used (different subject) had a similar problem when it's American based server ran a back-up at what would have been a quiet time in the States but, of course, wasnt here. But I doubt whether that's the issue as this evening here would be afternoon on the States.

It takes a long time to run everything through the NSA servers, look at the data in Langley and then get it on its way to each one of our home computers... ;-D>

Ah, but you forget that when it's done all that, it has to run through GCHQ here ;-0

"..it has to run through GCHQ here..."

There is true CH symmetry in your bringing "The Doughnut" into this... ;-D>

I agree with you that the time doesn't make much sense...but I have trouble believing that it's a coincidence if both of us are 'over here' and we're only having problems with one website using different browsers and different ISPs.

It happens in the mornings, too -- when I'd be more likely to believe that it's a maintenance issue, but it seems to be random on times throughout the day...and not every day. (But always the same behaviour, and always *only* this site.)

I've posted on the UK/Ireland board inviting fellow residents to join us here with their experiences.

FWIW, I haven't noticed any problems at all. I use either IE or Firefox and both seem equally OK.

Chowhound no longer works at all with the ancient IE browser at work - have had to ask the tech support to install Firefox.

              2. No problems here in Dublin...but then the good ol' IMF is looking after us now
