San Francisco Bay Area

Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Returning to the Bay for a weekend

I am going to be back in the Bay Area this weekend (Wed - Sun) after a long hiatus (I make ~yearly trips, but usually don't have enough time to seek out new food spots) and was wondering if there are any new cheap, ethnic restaurants that I should try? I spent the last 5 & 1/2 yrs in LA and this year in DC - where there is a severe lack of good, cheap ethnic food.

On my list of "must eats" is La Taqueria and Lahore. These are probably my 2 favorites, especially considering it's impossible to get a good mission burrito in LA and Lahore will make it spicy.

We'll be in the City for a couple nights, Sonoma for one or two and Berkely/SF for another. We love Mexican, Indian/Pakistan, Thai and Mid-Eastern. A good brunch spot would be nice too.

TIA.

  1. Forget Berkeley and do Oakland!

    1. Lers Ros. Some good advice in the archive on what to order and not.

      1. Bonus points for places that are open late!

Sorry for the lat add on, but also a place for a good pre-game (early-ish) meal near AT&T (with my gf's parents). Her father has bad hips, so can't really walk far. I did some research and what came up was 25 Lusk, Marlowe, Momo's (?) and CoCo500 (?).

            Marlowe's great.

What game is there at the ballpark this weekend?

Thursday night, CAL vs. USC. The game is at 6PM, so th OP would need something open early. Only Momo's comes to mind, and you can't get much closer.

You could go to Public House at ATT...but might be difficult to get a res...and it might be overrun by USC types.

Thursday before a 6pm game, that's tough. Marlowe doesn't open until 5:30. Public House is closed for a private event.

District opens at 4, anyone eaten there lately?

Ozone Thai is pretty good and open all afternoon.

Due to the time of the game, we were very limited in our choices. I decided on Ozone Thai since gf's mom loves Thai, and we all really liked it. Particular standouts include the pumpkin curry (w/ chicken) and Ozone Lamb.

Also, we weren't able to go to La Taqueria due to them being closed (late dinner after getting in), so we settled on El Farolito since it is right at the BART stop, and were both disappointed. Also had to settle for Pakwan instead of Lahore (also due to a late dinner), but our meal was great (malai kofta, tandoori chicken, achat lamb, saag paneer). Asked for very spicy, but it wasn't really spicy, but it was delicious. Still think Lahore is better though.

                    Thanks for your help.

          2. In Berkeley you might consider Vik's for lunch. Fantastic southern Indian street food.

Yes! Vik's is also on my list of Bay Area places. Not sure we'll be in Berkeley long enough for this...

            2. Indus Village (Pakastani/Indian) on San Pablo in Berkeley is excellent in my view, chef has a great touch, inexpensive.
