Mangosteen fruit

Is mangosteen fruit available anywhere in the area? We'll be visiting soon and have heard it's available in various retail markets in the greater LA area so figure it must be somewhere around SF too.

I bought some at 99 Ranch in Daly City maybe a couple of months ago. Very expensive, you needed to buy a bag of 10-12 fruit, and some had gone bad. Not worth it. I have no idea when mangosteen season is, but I haven't seen them since.

I've seen them in the Asian fruit/veg stores in Chinatown and at New May Wah in Inner Richmond. There used to be a seller at the Alemany farmer's market (selling CA grown mangosteens!) but I haven't seen them for at least several months (anybody have a report on what happened to the tropical fruit stand?)

Season is August-September. Irradiated and relatively tasteless. Not worth the $6/ lb price, bundled. No single pieces.

I never believed that vendor's products were grown in California, based on the items she sold.

Thanks, everyone! I did a search for mangosteen fruit and it was, well, fruitless. I have terrible --as in no--search fu. We'll be up in a couple of weeks, if they're out of season by then, we'll at least know where to start looking next time.
