Smitten Kitchen yellow cake and what kind of frosting?
I need to make yellow cupcakes tonight. I'll use Smitten Kitchen's yellow cake recipe, which is excellent.
Any suggestions for frosting? Is there a version of chocolate flour-based frosting that anyone loves and can direct me to?
Cherry Nut Frosting also sounds good, but I'd need a recipe---can anyone direct me to a recipe?
Any other ideas?
I am feeling creativity-challenged and need ideas from others with fully-charged brain cells.
Thanks very much.

What is the advantage of a flour-based frosting? I've made hundreds of cakes, but never a flour-based frosting.

Hi Jay,
I like flour frosting because of the taste--it's not cloyingly sweet and it doesn't taste like you are eating a stick of butter.
Here's a thread about it:
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/760095If you enter "flour frosting" in the search window, you'll get more hits.
In the books, Baked and Baked Explorations, the authors have many recipes for flour frostings. All I have made so far have been fabulous.

I also love flour frosting. My husband is not a big fan of buttercream, but he loves the flour frosting, which has a lighter texture than buttercream and, as soccermom13 says, it is not cloyingly sweet. I used the version where you cook the sugar with the flour, and there is absolutely no grittiness this way.

re: roxlet
I have a friend who hates buttercream, and doesn't like ganache that much. He's always trying to think of something different, particularly something he can flavor with cocoa or chocolate. Usually he makes a chocolate whipped cream frosting for yellow cake. But I think he will like this, too. I don't know how I've lived this long and never made a frosting with flour.

re: roxlet
Do you prefer flour frosting to the glossy chocolate frosting you made for the yellow birthday cake? I wasn't a big fan of the glossy frosting when it was warm (it reminded me of pudding), but once it cooled, it was a different animal. Plus, I know you added chocolate to the cocoa, so yours was a level up from mine. Just curious as both the glossy and the flour frostings are cooked and you like them both. :)

re: kattyeyes
Hi Kattyeyes,
Please forgive my very tardy response. We had a very serious problem at work (still do, in fact), and it's taken a lot of my time. Because of the work problem, I've not yet made the cupcakes. When I do, I think I will make the Baked flour frosting in this recipe for the Baked Whiteout Cake. It looks really good. Plus, DH does not like white/yellow cake with chocolate frosting and of course he'll have to have a cupcake or two :0)http://sweetapolita.com/2011/03/my-ba...
