Driving from Tampa, FL to Washington, DC
Me: Craft Beer Fanatic
Hubs: Southern Food Lover
We only have the weekend and have already decided to stay in Savannah, GA on Saturday night. Any suggestions for an awesome road trip/visit to Savannah would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Our car broke down in Callahan FL and rolled into a car repair place across the street from Callahan's barbecue at lunch time -- sure proof of a benevolent Providence. It was pretty good and a great way to wait for a quick car repair. If you stick to the interstate going through Jacksonville, the Southern Diner just south of the river is good - or was a few years ago - and close to the highway. Grouper and southern sides.
From Savannah to DC, the main issue is probably how much time you're willing to take - how far you are willing to get off the interstate. There are a lot of I95 threads with the usual disputes and occasional name-calling. I always stop at Parker's in Wilson, which has wonderful cornd sticks and good fried chicken -- and while their barbecue is inauthentic (cooked over gas) it has the not inconsiderable virtues of slow-cooked pork. There are Mexican places worth looking into but for many people eating Mexican food on long drives in enclosed spaces is not a real good idea.
When you get to DC, you definitely should venture into suburbia for some Dogfish Head - really good craft beers (although I can't vouch for the food.)
I'm assuming you're taking I95, so you'll stop for lunch before Savannah? Are you interested in NC barbeque? There are some great places to stop if you're willing to go off the highway.
In Savannah, I like Olde Pink House for dinner. It's nice Southern food with a little modern twist in a house that has a ghost. Are you planning to stay in the Historic District?
I would skip Maurice's, unless you like racist memorabilia and not-good barbeque.
Clark's in Santee is ok, but I think you may be starving by the time you get that far south. I do the drive between Charleston and DC often and I usually pack my own lunch just so I can get the boring drive done quicker. It's boring.

Hard to reach a good BBQ chain but I would recommend Mojos BBQ,(NC style BBQ) Bono's(chain) or Monroe's(near I-10 and Commonwealth.-a 10 min drive off the path but worth it)
