Restaurants Near HOB in Gas Lamp

Going to House of Blues next weekend & looking for a place for dinner before the show. I have read some of the threads about the Gaslamp and it doesn't look like there is much that Chowhounders are excited about in this area.

Any suggestions? Is food at HOB worthy? I had one person recommend it to me recently.

We'd love to be able to walk if possible... but if there truly isn't anything in the area, we are willing to drive a short way.

Also heard good things about Merk. Is this within walking distance??

I work just up the street from HOB - the area mostly focuses on the lunch crowd, but there are a few places worth mentioning:

Stout - An Irish bar with the best Reuben in the city - the corned beef is homemade, and delicious.
La Gran Tapa - A Spanish tapas bar with pretty good food. I like the braised short ribs in red wine sauce.
Downtown Johnny Brown's - Okay, the food is meh, but the beer is good.

I tried it once or twice, and I would skip it.

Go to Cafe Chloe instead.
