restaurant near Lumiere Theater

I'm looking for a restaurant near the Lumiere Theater on California Street in SF. Nothing fancy but cozy and good place before or after a movie. We're open to any kind of food, just looking for neighborhood favorites in a neighborhood we don't know well. Thanks for any recs you might offer!

  1. For lunch, Swan Oyster Depot (cash only, closed Sundays).

My two favorites near there are Tajine (Moroccan) and Cafe Zitouna (Tunisian), each within two blocks. Bob's Donuts is on the same block as Tajine.

But just remember - it would have to be a matinee or the first evening showing, as Swan Oyster Depot closes at 5 every day. But SWD gets my vote too.

    2. I think right nextdoor to the theater is one of the 1st Vietnamese restaurants in the Bay Area. Their name escapes me, but they specialize in bbq chicken. Cordon Bleu?

Right you are ...... Cordon Bleu Vietnamese Restaurant - right next to the Lumiere. It's been there since the 1970's - maybe even 60's ? They have a 5 spice chicken that they're well known for IIRC. Casual kind of place I think.

More dive than casual. I haven't eaten there in years, so I can't comment on the chicken.

I do miss the Thai/Vietnamese restaurant that used to be on the other side of the theater, by the flower store. It was owned by a friend's boyfriend. Emerald Garden?

          1. re: Windy

Yes, Emerald Garden was the name. I had my wedding rehearsal dinner there ages ago.

Following the theme of is-it-still-there restaurants, is the Han's Hibachi? Korean place still open on Polk. They had OK Korean bbq and lots of it.

            1. re: chocolatetartguy

              Yes, it's still on Polk.

Quantity is the main thing they have going for them though. Close enough to Japantown, where there's better Korean bbq.

I lived for a while (2 years) on the next block over of Sacramento, Cordon Bleu would be great one night and the next time leave me nauseous. take a good whiff on entry, if it's only the sour of fish sauce you're OK, but on the bad nights the chicken wasn't quite right.

          4. Grubstake is right around there and has some Portuguese options. So is Crepes A Go-Go. Also there's Toast (use to be Bob's Diner) good for breakfast/diner food (all day).

A 2nd on Bob's Donuts...perfect for after the movie. They should be cooking up batches at that time.

            1. 2 - 3 blocks away from Lumiere is neighborhood-y Nob Hill Grille. Their web site says, "For guests that are away from home and desire a night off from the San Francisco restaurant 'scene,' we offer a friendlier home-style environment..."
