foodie, mid-priced & great atmosphere dinner recommendations in city?

My former roommate and I are meeting up in November to celebrate her birthday. We lived in SF more years ago than I want to admit. We're now mid-30s, and I'm looking for recommendations for an interesting foodie dinner destination that won't break the bank, won't force romance down our throats, or make us feel ancient. We're staying by Lower Nob Hill, but as former residents we know the city well and are willing to go to almost any neighborhood. We don't want to hop across the bay, however, given time constraints. Thanks in advance!

Thanks, all. Great leads. I'll dig around their sites to explore menus & reservation availability.

second La Ciccia or maybe Nopa. I guess it depends on what you mean by interesting. For Lower Nob Hill maybe walk over to Lers Ros (though I would say this is cheaper than mid-priced) and use the extra budget for drinks at Bourbon & Branch afterward.

I'll second Nopa as another possibility.

SPQR : convivial ambience (somewhat loud, but quieter at the chef's counter), very good service, food, wine list, features a variety of fresh made pastas specifically matched to equally fresh ingredients.

Barbacco or its more upscale but still great value neighbor, Perbacco.

+1 on La Ciccia for your specific requests. Menu is interesting (Sardinian) as are the wines, the atmosphere is lively and the service is delightful. It's a neighbourhood joint that punches well above its weight class.
