Restaurants in or near Lenox

Ignore the other posts. I know I should have put where I'm going in the title. Sorry. I can't figure out how to delete the other 2. I'll be in Lenox in2 weels and will be traveling around there for a few days. Not interested in Asian restaurants unless they are great.

Thanks. I made a reservation at Alta Wine Bar. It was #1 on Trip Advisor. I'm thinking of Old inn on the Green. That got 27 points in Zagat. (Not that I do much checking.)

      1. re: lenorel57

Old Inn on the Green is wonderful. Go there for sure. The foliage will be great and they'll have their fireplace burning I'm sure. And the food is some of the best in the Berkshires. Peter Platt is a great chef!

        1. re: cowgirlinthesand

Thanks. That's one of my probable picks.

          1. re: cowgirlinthesand

no guarantee of foliage this year at all!

            1. re: magiesmom

I know. I"m not actually going there for the foliage. ..just for a mini-vacation on the way back to NYC from a couple of days in Boston..

            2. re: cowgirlinthesand

Old Inn is totally wonderful - a unique place for both great food and ambiance!

        2. Old Inn on the Green is just THE BEST. The food and ambience are great. Also, then there is James (Stahl), the wine czar. Old INN is the ONLY restaurant at which we let somebody (James) choose the wines. You tell him how much you want to spend and what you are interested in, and, he will make you happy.

Thanks. Looks like Old Inn will be one of mychoices. The other 2 are Alta Restaurant and Wine Bar and Nudel. I'll be in Lenox for 3 nights. I expect to have 3 nights of good eating.

Be sure to get to Nudel early unless it is a weeknight. But imo it is worth any wait.

get there early anyway. there was a long line a week ago tuesday, by 6:45.

          2. Nudel in Lenox, and John Andrews in Egremont, the service at JA is awful.however the food does make up for it.

I'm hoping to go to Nudel on Tues. Oct.25. We have reservations at Alta Wine Bar for Mon. and Old Inn on The Green for Wed. I don't think I'd want to go to a place with terrible service no matter how good the food is.

alta is terrible. tried to eat there twice, only succeeded once and the food was borderline inedible. the second time, we were seated but nobody showed up at our table for 30 minutes so we got up and left. save your money and aggravation and enjoy old inn and nudel (both great recommendations).

                1. re: jon

That's disappointing. It's rated #1 on Trip Advisor. I'll have to re-think my Mon. dinner.

                  1. re: lenorel57

Having had many many really good meals at Alta --- I find jon's comment surprising. May have hit an off night, or perhaps the height of the season?
We had an incredibly rude waiter spoil our dining experience for 4 at Old Inn a while back --- but I wouldn't say Old Inn was necessarily terrible because of it.
And we just had a fine meal at John Andrews with excellent service.
Any specific night, one never knows.

                    1. re: lenorel57

Yes, we have enjoyed Alta every time we have eaten there. Don't let one person's experience dissuade you from going somewhere (or the opposite).

                    2. re: jon

I have NEVER had a bad experience at Alta. We eat there at least 3 times a year during different seasons and are never disappointed.

                      1. re: rhoneranger

So I won't cancel my reservation. Anyhow, it's onlyone meal.

                        1. re: lenorel57

i'm just saying it's neither a good restaurant nor good for the area, IMHO. we prefer nudel, the mexican place on route 7 near great barrington, haven cafe, bizen, and allium (at times, but mostly we want it to be better than it actually ever is). we've had very poor meals at john andrews, fin, and bistro zinc. i actually don't understand why, with such great farmland, there aren't better "farm-to-table" restaurants in the area.

by the way, try and grab at least one breakfast at joe's (in lee) for an old-time diner scene or either a delicious breakfast or lunch at haven cafe in lenox. highly suggest the fish sandwich.

                          1. re: jon

I'm staying at Garden Gables Inn so I get breakfast. Maybe haven cafe for lunch ...if i'm not too full

                            1. re: jon

I have never had a bad meal at Alta, Fin, Nudel, or John Andrews. I think Fin is much better than Bizen, certainly more innovative. Nick is always coming up with new, interesting items. As I have said a few times about Allium, the portions (and I am not a big eater) are more precious than the ones at Wheatleigh ever THOUGHT about being. That Mexican restaurant is in a totally different category from the rest of these places. For me, it is a place to go after a six o'clock movie for something to eat.

One more lunch suggestion...Spoon is really, really good. They serve breakfast and lunch; if you go for lunch and want something from the breakfast menu, it is available.

Thanks...and thanks to all of you. I'll be in Lenox 10/26 thru 10/28. Will let you know where I ate and what I thought.
