Nudel in Lenox, and John Andrews in Egremont, the service at JA is awful.however the food does make up for it.

alta is terrible. tried to eat there twice, only succeeded once and the food was borderline inedible. the second time, we were seated but nobody showed up at our table for 30 minutes so we got up and left. save your money and aggravation and enjoy old inn and nudel (both great recommendations).

Having had many many really good meals at Alta --- I find jon's comment surprising. May have hit an off night, or perhaps the height of the season?
We had an incredibly rude waiter spoil our dining experience for 4 at Old Inn a while back --- but I wouldn't say Old Inn was necessarily terrible because of it.
And we just had a fine meal at John Andrews with excellent service.
Any specific night, one never knows. -

re: lenorel57
i'm just saying it's neither a good restaurant nor good for the area, IMHO. we prefer nudel, the mexican place on route 7 near great barrington, haven cafe, bizen, and allium (at times, but mostly we want it to be better than it actually ever is). we've had very poor meals at john andrews, fin, and bistro zinc. i actually don't understand why, with such great farmland, there aren't better "farm-to-table" restaurants in the area.
by the way, try and grab at least one breakfast at joe's (in lee) for an old-time diner scene or either a delicious breakfast or lunch at haven cafe in lenox. highly suggest the fish sandwich.

re: jon
I have never had a bad meal at Alta, Fin, Nudel, or John Andrews. I think Fin is much better than Bizen, certainly more innovative. Nick is always coming up with new, interesting items. As I have said a few times about Allium, the portions (and I am not a big eater) are more precious than the ones at Wheatleigh ever THOUGHT about being. That Mexican restaurant is in a totally different category from the rest of these places. For me, it is a place to go after a six o'clock movie for something to eat.

Old Inn on the Green is just THE BEST. The food and ambience are great. Also, then there is James (Stahl), the wine czar. Old INN is the ONLY restaurant at which we let somebody (James) choose the wines. You tell him how much you want to spend and what you are interested in, and, he will make you happy.
