Having trouble addiong links in a reply

this is a difficulty sporadically again. They software correctly retrieves the name but then it does not stick.

  1. Restaurant links I assume? Is this happening when you first post the reply, when you edit it without refreshing, or even after refreshing the page following a post?

I'm finding it when using the edit window to try to add a link. It doesn't stick even refreshing a few hours later, not there.

      1. re: Melanie Wong

It happened to me in a couple of responses (the usual context in which I am adding a link)

It also happened in an edit response context. but having added and readded in the past I just walked away this time.

on the other hand, I was able to add a couple links in a reply today.

Also, last night I added a restaurant, La Nostrana, in Italy, but now its nowhere to be found. It finalized and appeared on a map and even came up on a search but now is disappeared.

Another restaurant added went missing, Casalinga, in florence.

Jen, I hope you don't mind if I ask a question to help clarify what you're saying. Are you saying (a) that you are creating a link in a discussion forum to a restaurant in the database, and that the link then disappears, or (b) that you are creating a listing in the restaurant database, and that the listing then disappears? Or both?

EDIT: It sounds like you may be saying both. And in my additional post below, what appears to be happening is a problem in whatever indexes the Chowhound software uses for finding a restaurant in the database. What's happening is, a restaurant listing exists in the database (and, as you can see below, it certainly exists), but it cannot be found by searching the restaurant database or by creating a post with a link to it. That appears to be what's causing both these problems. Hopefully Engineering can find out why and fix it.

            1. re: jen kalb

Here's additional information for Engineering to use in helping solve the problem.

To try to track down what's happening to the problem Jen reports, I searched RESTAURANTS looking for "La Nostrana" in Italy, and got zero results. So I found the address information for Trattoria La Nostrana on Google, and tried to add it as a restaurant in the restaurant database. I got the following warning message:

              "Duplicate restaurant(s) detected: La Nostrana
Is this the place you wanted to add? if not, Continue"

So I right clicked on La Nostrana in the error message, and sure enough, the restaurant is out there in the restaurant database:

(I did not proceed with adding an entry to duplicate that one.)

Somehow this listing is in the restaurant database but is not present in whatever indexes the software looks at when searching, either when searching on restaurants or when creating a post and trying to create a link. Here's how I'm sure the latter case is true as well. I tried creating a reply in the topic about La Nostrana, and sure enough, if I wanted to create a link (by saying it's a review of a specific restaurant), that listing for La Nostrana is NOT showing up in the available choices. So it's NOT showing up when doing a search on the restaurant database, and it's NOT showing up when you're trying to add a link to a post, but it IS showing up when checking for duplicates when adding an entry to the restaurant database.

The situation appears to be at least slightly different for Casalinga, the restaurant in Florence mentioned by Jen. I could not find any evidence for an existing entry in the restaurant database - same as La Nostrana - but in the case of Casalinga, it did not give me any warning that an entry was already out there. So I proceeded with creating a new entry, which can be found at

                1. re: nsxtasy

I have consolidated the two Casalinga entries now. I never try to enter restaurants in a post having had problems with that in the past, whatever gremlines there were seem to have gone away.thanks to Engineering. Only time will tell whether the link adding problem originally reported recurs. It has been a problem both in an original reply and when editing. At this point, usually abandon the post and come back later if it starts to be a problem.

                  1. re: jen kalb

To clarify, the missing-restaurant problem has been resolved, but the link-adding problem has not been properly addressed. If I understand you correctly, it's gone away on its own?

              2. re: jen kalb

I've checked the database directly, and all of the restaurants you've mentioned are definitely there. The pages for them aren't showing up? Or are you unable to find them via search?

                1. re: Engineering

Fixed the underlying problem. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

        2. I had previously noticed, and reported*, that this happens (retrieves the name for you but does not add the link when you click on it) when you first create your post and even edit it, when the bottom right of the post says "Permalink | Edit | Thanks for posting!". If you refresh the topic, so that it has the usual "Permalink | Report | Edit | Reply" on the bottom right, and THEN go edit your post, it works, i.e. any restaurant names you retrieve and click on then become links below the post.

When you say it's happening sporadically, if this is only occurring when it says "Thanks for posting" on your post, it's not sporadic; it's the same glitch that has existed for a while.

I do remember that post, and was hoping to confirm that it was in fact the same issue. Given the recent progress in our infrastructure upgrades, I wanted to verify that the situation had not regressed further.

We are investigating the original problem, but going has ben regrettably slow on that front. Thank you as always for your patience.

            1. re: Engineering

ok. I will continue to pay attention to how the linking is/is not working and report if I have more observations, thals for all of your help.
