Vietnamese in the South Bay

I like the place on Crenshaw just north of Manhattan Beach Blvd. (if it is still there) but can you suggest others? Bamboo Song is bland city.

  1. vn dish is about as good as it gets around here. it'll do in a pinch.

pho hong long used to be in the same category, but, sadly, not anymore.

yup. i went last month and the soup tasted like it had more amino acids from msg than from cows.

    2. There is Saigon Flavor just off the corner of Crenshaw and Carson in Torrance.

I've only been there once, and it was a couple of years ago. I'm not an expert on Vietnamese food so I don't know if it's a good representation of the cuisine. I stopped in to get a Banh Mi for the first time. It tasted good but it was my first Banh Mi sandwich ever. I didn't get anything else on the menu. My concern was looking at their kitchen. It wasn't a C rated restaurant from the health inspector point of view but it didn't look organized. There was an older lady who appeared to do most of the prep/cooking and a bunch of younger people standing around looking confused. The one neat thing about the place was this completely random shark tank. It was fun looking at the small shark (nurse?) while waiting for the food. I'm not sure if this place has changed much.

Here's an old review from CH with info about SB Vietnamese places (apparently).

There are also some reviews on Yelp.

We've been several times and it hasn't changed much other than some rearrangement of the fish tanks. Same glass dining sets and plants :). I'm no expert either, but the pho is decent and they currently offer a free drink with a meal. The banh mi is respectable and costs more than those in OC or SGV, but it's the only place around in the Torrance area that I know of. Not sure if it's still rated a C, but we've never had any problems with the food.

Also yes to Blue Lotus in Carson.

        1. re: ristretto

over in carson, i'd recommend pho king way instead of blue lotus.

          1. re: ristretto

Hi Ristretto, I never said it was ever rated a C.... in fact, I said it wasn't C-rated (which means either A or B... but I don't recall which grade it was) when I went but it didn't look organized. I'm sure you just misread what I wrote... but, I just want to clarify what I meant.

            1. re: DrBruin

              You're right, I misread - sorry.

        2. I like Saigon Dish in Lawndale. The kind of place where the owner knows everyone's name. A very welcoming and friendly neighborhood spot. Plus they have vegetarian pho and noodle dishes for my son.

Saigon Dish is pretty good. Saigon Flavor is really, really mediocre.

            I second Saigon Dish.

            1. PHO SO 1- Tozai Plaza- Redondo Bch and Western in Gardena

              1. I actually like Pho Hoa. I normally get a number 19 pho ( chicken ) all white meat chicken and very tasty. Place seems authentic to me. Not many time I have been there that it wasnt busy. The rice dishes are good too long with the noodles, but Im not an expert..

"all white meat chicken" - that reminds me, although somewhat off-topic - anywhere with soup noodles similar to TK Noodle in the Bay Area?

                2. Pho So 1 Restaurant in Gardena on Redondo Beach Blvd and Western is pretty good.

                  1. Recently opened Pho Consomme just west of Western Ave on Redondo Bch Blvd.
Next to Firestone is pretty good. Gives Pho So 1 a run for it's money...

I saw Pho Consomme the other day. Do they have Banh Mi? Thanks..

                    2. There's a new banh mi place on Crenshaw, just south of Manhattan Beach Blvd., across from El Camino. It's in the same plaza as Geoffrey's Comics and Gamestop. I stopped in for a banh mi the other day, and it was definitely the best I've had in the South Bay - much better than Pho Hong Long was. I got the classic banh mi ($3.50), and there was plenty of pate and mystery meat, along with lots of the pickled veggies (which I love), cilantro, red onion, and lots of jalapenos (at my request). The bread was toasty, the meat flavorful, and the veggies fresh. Luckily, this is on my way to work, so I will definitely be picking up lunch sandwiches. Which will quickly become breakfast sandwiches because I won't be able to resist eating them immediately.

Looks like the link isn't up yet, so here's the info:

                      (310) 527-7151

Note: There's a sign that says Buy 2, get 1 free outside. This only applies to the coffee, not to the sandwiches. Boo.

                      1. My favorite for pho is Pho Hoa, which has been mentioned here. But if you're looking for a place with more variety, I also like Pho Thai Long, which is right next to Pho Hoa on Prairie. They serve a decent pho, but also vermicelli bowls, summer rolls, and rice plates. I especially like that they serve Vietnamese rice crepes, which are delicious and very generously portioned. You get two big crepes to an order, and they're super crispy savory. The place is very clean, and the owner is sweet and aims to please. Good for bigger parties too - I went with 12 people, and they pushed a bunch of tables together for us.

The last time I passed Pho Thai Long, it had been replaced by Biryani House. No matter, I still prefer Pho Hoa and Huong Vi down the street. The latter has quite a selection of dishes and the people running it are also very pleasant.
Good to hear about Van Sandwiches, same strip mall as Afghan Express.

I know, so sad. I went to lunch at Pho Hoa yesterday and noticed the Biryani House. Oh well... I like Huong Vi too. Caveat on Van Sandwiches. I went yesterday morning to pick up a few sandwiches. There was only one lady working, and she really rushed through the sandwiches in order to get to other people's orders. The bread wasn't toasted, and the toppings were a bit sparse - a marked difference from my first visit. So YMMV depending on who's working and how busy they are.
