Alaskan Black Cod a/k/a Sablefish

Does anyone know where I can find Alaskan black cod a/k/a sablefish in NYC? I've read that it's similar to Chilean sea bass a/k/a Patagonia toothfish, which I love (and yes, I know it's on the overfished list), and would like to try it as an alternative. I'm not sure if it makes any sense for the Pacific Northwest suppliers to ship over here and haven't been able to find it locally.

  1. Are you looking for a place in the Outer Boroughs, or did this post land here by mistake? In Brooklyn, the highest end fish store I've found is Fish Tales. I'd probably try that place first. In Manhattan, I've purchased black cod before at Citarella and Lobster Place. I haven't been too crazy about Fairway's fish.

Anywhere in NYC, but preferably Brooklyn or Manhattan. I've read good things about Fish Tales and will check it out. Thanks!

    2. I know of no place in Queens that sells it..(the one place that did, on Austin St, closed 2 years ago), and I can't speak for any other outer borough, but its pretty easy to find in Manhattan. Whole Foods, Eataly, and Citarella always have it....probably Fairway also. Usually about $20/lb. It is more sustainably fished than Cliean "sea bass".
