We did Escape from NY pizza. Half pepperoni, half sausage and green bell peppers on all. They delivered for free [well, tip made it not quite free]. It did the trick. We ended up walking over to Bi-Rite for ice cream later on, so we ended the night on a high note! Thanks everyone for input.

New York style is tough as California pizza tends to have a thicker, softer, paler crust. For simple old-school sausage or pepperoni, maybe Sausage Factory for sit-down or Marcello's for a quick slice or two.

re: Robert Lauriston
My parents took me to Sausage Factory all the time when I was a child. I've not been in years, but my sister went fairly recently (within the last year) and said it was exactly the same--not better but not worse. It apparently still has an old-school, Castro-in-the-70s vibe. If you go, DebitNM, please let me know how you like it.

Takeout from Delfina is better than anything else nearby, and not expensive. Go early if you want to eat there.
For variety, Pauline's or Little Star, both on Valencia in the Mission.

Don't miss the hot chocolate at Chilango if you end up there, or anything with the fresh tortillas (their carnitas rival Nopalito's).
Pauline's is California style pizza: sourdough crust, famous pesto, excellent sausage. They grow produce for salads, make their own wine, and have very good desserts.
Little Star is hipper and offers deep dish, although I prefer their thin crust. Enjoy!
