PIzza and Socca in Berkeley
Wow, hey Morton, i remember you posting on chowhound a few years back on Berkeley eats:
do you happen to remember if Socca place near Gregoire's is still open? along with that chocolate place in the gourmet food court? also, is Gregoire's still good?
And where do i go for a great slice of pizza in Berkeley?
Lastly, what are some great places that have opened in the past 3 years in Berkeley???
Gioia's is wonderful pizza, especially the mushroom. Very thin, very good crust. Recently tried the Cheeseboard again and the bready (as opposed to pizza-crusty) thick bottom grossed me out.
Try it yourself, kevin. People round here sometimes get fixed in their negativity about different pizza places when, in the final analysis as my husband is authentically from that sainted home of American pizza, NEW YAWK, says, it's up to individual tastes.

Gioia is by far my favorite pizza place in the Bay Area. Good cheese to crust ratio, great topping combos. I love the mushroom, which they preroast in the oven in a large pan. When I used to visit NYC, I never went to John's, et. al, but Gioia is what I imagine NY style pizza should be. Until Gioia, I would never have a simple cheese slice.
Socca is long gone. You can get better socca at Nizza la Bella.
No great pizza by the slice in Berkeley. Gioia's probably the best. Cheese Board is good in its eccentric way.
