Viet Noodle Bar, Atwater Village

I have just re located to the L.A area and was searching for a Pho Soup place. This place is not authentic at all. I had asked for the garnish which consists of Srouts, jalapeno's and cilantro and all I got was a strange look. The noodles in the soup were not your regular vermicelli as well. The service was not very good at all. If anybody can direct me to a great authentic pho place I would certainly appreciate it.

I eat here reg. since it's so close to me.
Spicy can be SPICY so I go medium and I can take spice.

Wat Dong Moon Lek is terrific and makes a more flavorful pho than Viet Noodle Bar which seems on the bland side.

        2. Not sure where you're located, but some good spots in the SGV are:

          Golden Deli
815 W Las Tunas Drive, San Gabriel, CA 91776
          626-308-0803

          Vietnam Restaurant
340 W Las Tunas Dr, San Gabriel, CA 91776
          626-281-5577

          Pho 79
          29 S Garfield Ave, Alhambra, CA 91801
          626-289-0239

Personally I prefer Golden Deli, but a lot of hounds like Pho 79. I would like Pho 79 more if I didn't get an MSG buzz (and then crash) from their broth. Pho 79 has pho with char-grilled pork, which I wish more places would do.

Golden Deli's dining room is often slammed, though take out is lightning fast no matter how busy they are. Vietnam Restaurant up the street is comparable in quality to Golden Deli, and usually not quite as busy.

          1. Hi Imvetter,
You might want to consider giving Viet Noodle Bar another try.
The first time I went there I wasn't sure what to make of the Pho Ga. It was so different from the earthy star-anise laden pho I had before.
I found out from the owner that this simple pho without accompaniments was typical of pho from Hanoi. By the second time I had it, I really appreciated the simple clean chicken-y broth.
If the pho doesn't work for you, you might still want to try the bun with turmeric fish. Its an amazing dish.
Viet Noodle Bar also has fresh flavored soy milk. Love the black-sesame flavored one.

Wow! That menu looks fantastic! And I am very impressed by their wine selection - McManis Viognier is not well known but is lovely.

Besides their pho, what is your favorite thing there?

                  1. re: happybaker

The bun is very good also, their lemongrass steak is perfect. The boyfriend gets it every time, and I always get the pho ga. I somehow can't not get it. Lots of basil, bean sprouts, limes and jalapenos. I add a healthy squirt of sriracha too. The broth on its own is amazing, not too much anise, plenty of fresh chicken. I get a very specific craving for pho sometimes, a call unanswered by many other places.

The cold shrimp spring rolls are springy and tasty. The crepe thing looks amazing, haven't tried it.

This is my go- to place for visitors, they have a good wine list, there is always an open table, its super clean and the food is cheap and good. never been disappointed. And I can be picky. I don't like sticky menus or flies.

a friend loves the fish platter, and another the mignon beef plate... they have a split chinese menu, I'm not so keen on over sauced chinese style food personally.

I like Via. I have only been a couple times for lunch, but I was impressed with the beer and wine selection. The food for lunch was good, nothing I have had has been great, but it's tough to judge from a couple quick lunches.
