Dinner before 9:30 Club

daves_32 Oct 3, 2011 10:14 AM

I am looking for a recommendation for dinner beforea Wednesday night show at 9:30 club. I haven't been up there in almost a year and the 14th street and U street corridor seems to be changing every day. willing to walk from as far away as Churchkey. Want something that won't last more than an hour or so, on the more casual/fun side, and won't make it tough to stand for a few hours.
My initial thoughts: The Standard, Marvin, or the like. I am in the dark about most of the new options up there. Let me know!

Last time we did this, we thought about the Standard or Masa 14 but ended up at 1905, partly because it so close and we could get a reservation. I thought it was ok/fine-- not dying to go back, but I would consider it again before a 9:30 show. We had pretty slow service (for no apparent reason, since only maybe 1/3 of the tables were being used), but that might have just been our waiter.

my standard recommendation: Oohs and Aahs. Get the grilled shrimp with vegetables over grits, broiled crabcake, and lemon pepper wings. Make sure you get the crabcake broiled, not fried. This will take longer, but you get to eat your other food first.

I would head over to Estadio and grab a few plates of tapas and one of their delicious cocktails.

          Estadio or Masa 14?

The food at Estadio is far better in my opinion. And the cocktails at Estadio are much better too--the drinks at Masa 14 tend to be too sweet and not particularly well done, whereas the cocktails at Estadio are some of the best in the city. Try the Old Raj Gin with orange thyme tonic.

DIckson Wine Bar - awesome cocktails, phenomenal banh mi, cool beers, lovely wines, and around the corner from the club.

All good suggestions above. I'd add Bar Pilar, if you can get there early. The small plates menu changes often and usually includes a couple adventurous dishes.

American Ice Co. is pretty much right across the street from 9:30. It's another BBQ place. Not as good as The Standard (IMO) but it's a nice space, with a patio, good beer list, and it's really close.

Also, I haven't been yet, but apparently DC9 has recently revamped their menu. The new chef used to work at Palena, Hook, and Minibar (!).

Oh yes Bar Pilar. Why do I always forget about Bar Pilar!? Go there for sure and get the chicken livers. Although if you order that you really don't need anything else besides a cocktail because it's so rich.

You can also try Etete(Ethiopian) which is much closer to the 9:30 Club

The perfect fall night called for The Standard. We waited a few minutes to snag seats outside but it was worth it to enjoy the weather. I got the brisket sandwich which was excellent and really tender. It was quite fatty but if not watching the calories, it was a great choice. My friend got the burger and she said it was good but listed off several burgers around town that she liked better. We also had a great soft pretzel and some nice German beers in their own glassware. A fun and unassuming place. Would return. However, we were talking about how eating twice at the same place in that corridor would be a shame with several new options on every corner.
