Large group (35) seeking dinner in Chinatown (may need private room)

After a conference in downtown crossing, about 35 people hope to walk to chinatown for dinner.

We'll be having a speaker at dinner, so we'd like to have a space (private room?) where that person can be heard while also not bothering other patrons.

We are also seeking to keep costs down, so we're looking for mid-priced restaurants, and we're thinking a pre-set buffet might be easier than folks' ordering individually.

Any suggestions?

you're not talking about the lower level room, right? I've used that space for larger functions of 100+. as a general note, Karen, if you want to use Hei La Moon, you can cut down on the dishes if you want to save money. otherwise, it's about $50pp including tax+tip for the cheapest 10 course meal (served family style). also, I'd suggest talking to John--he's the easiest to work with there.

otherwise, I'd check out East Ocean City if they have a room available. I prefer their food the most out of the Chinatown restaurants I've been to.

if you're willing to walk a little further and aren't necessarily looking for Chinese food, I know that Maggiano's has a couple of private rooms that should fit 35 people comfortably, and is much quieter than the main room since it's in the lower level. if I remember correctly, food is served buffet style, and may come out to $30-40pp.

    2. Any of the dim sum places should have lots of available space in the evening if they're not hosting a wedding banquet or two (ie, not on a weekend). You should be able to hash out with them a family style dinner for each table. They'll each have preset menus that they offer (though usually printed only in Chinese) This goes for Hei La Moon, China Pearl, Chau Chow City, etc. The smaller restaurants might have somewhat better food, but not your own room to yourself.
