"Taste This" - new series coming to PBS Create starting mid October 2011
i liked the show, but the website needs some serious help -- identifying episodes and getting the recipes right. one recipe for remoulade (for his seafood roll) used "salmon tapas paste" and then had a question mark by that entry in the recipe online. what.... you can't take the time to specify what it was in fact? (when he made it on the show and dipped or poured some pink stuff out of a jar, i kept saying out loud, "salmon?" salmon?!") shabby. i found the recipes ok, but he used too much of that remoulade on the seafood (and i even adore remoulade!). it also looked like he didn't grill the seafood at high enough heat quickly.
the fresh tomato pasta sauce with balsamic reduction looked good, but it wasn't very "reduced" in my estimation. he also cooked the pasta in too little water.
i think the show needs work, but is promising. if it has been on for two years, then there is no excuse, but this was the first i saw it.
he says they always time things on the show for 30 minutes, so it is all a la minute. he may need to rethink that concept.
This show has been running on my local PBS station (Long Island/ch.21) for a year or so now. He generally visits a restaurant or two at the start of the show and then cooks something that riffs on the dishes sampled at those restaurants. I can't say that I find his recipes very appealing and, come to think of it, I have yet to seek out one of his recipes to try at home.
It seems to be a pretty low budget production but perhaps, if it's being rolled out to more PBS stations, it may have been given an upgrade.
It is still better than the Chew!
