Musselman's Apple butter..? Refrigerate?

Does anyone know if Musselman's Apple Butter has to be refrigerated after opening? I believe the site says to refrigerate it.. but is that ABSOLUTELY necessary? Isn't it the same as jams?

I am trying to find spreads that can be kept in my office for lunch.

Hi Grace, I work for Musselman's :) Apple Butter actually has a lower sugar content than jams and jellies. Good news is less calories, bad news is without the sugar as a preservative the apple butter will mold quicker if kept unrefrigerated. We do sell individual portion cups for foodservice. Here is a website for you to purchase :) http://www.nationwidecandy.com/apple-...

Thank you so much this is helpful.. although to be honest, I did not realize that Musselman's contains HFCS--yikes. I am not certain if I want to purchase/try it now. Do you know the fat, sugar, calorie, fiber info on the individual portions? I guess if it is real low sugar, than I might look the other way over HFCS, but I have been really really trying to avoid it.

The Apple Butter in the portion cups is the same product as in the larger jars, so the same nutritional facts. We respect your stand on HFCS. We have looked into changing to sugar, but the majority of the jelly/ jam category contains HFCS and it's tough to compete.

I hope you find something that works for your office lunch :) Thanks for thinking of Musselman's.

      Keep it chilled.

If you're looking for something to keep at the office and refrigerator space is a concern, I recommend looking for single serve items at Costco, Sam's, BJs etc. Alternatively, pick up some of those small Gladware containers and split the larger container into smaller portions. Just grab one in the AM and head out the door.

I *though* that jams had to be refrigerated as well after opening. Is this not the case? I always look on the container if I am not sure about something. It usually says about refrigerating if necessary.

Almost anything will say "refrigerate after opening" -- this is basically a cover their ass instruction because people are stupid and won't use common sense. Jams can be kept at room temperature. They will get moldy faster than they would in the fridge, but they won't "spoil." Jams were invented long before refrigerators!

Most foods were indeed invented prior to the fridge. Doesn't mean we should avoid using such a fine tool. With a husband recently afflicted with food poisoning. which then turned into a battle with a super-bug as a result and whose body might not ever fully recover I am starting to learn that just because you can do something it doesn't mean that you should.

I keep it in the fridge. Even then. if I forget about it, it gets moldy.

Not sure if it has as much sugar as jam. I'd stick it in the fridge
