kosher vegetarian caterer in New Jersey

cherib Oct 1, 2011 12:31 PM

We're having a party and one guest is glatt kosher, so the menu is being driven by her needs. Since there is also a vegetarian coming I figured vegetarian is the best bet...But who to cater? I have no idea who does really great kosher catering. We're in central NJ, but I'll travel to pick up really tasty food.

I don't have any suggestions, but any kosher caterer that does dairy food can easily accommodate a vegetarian. The only non-vegetarian food served at a kosher dairy meal is fish, and I'm sure that you could work around that without much effort.

What kind of party is this? If you are willing to just pick up prepared dishes, I would reccommend Jerusalem Pizza out of Highland Park. The hechsher will be fine for your kosher guest.

If you are doing pick-up stuff and will be reheating in your oven, please keep your kosher guest involved in your plans so that he/she will comfortable with all the arrangements.

I second Jerusalem Pizza in Highland Park. Their pizza is average, but they make really nice salads and other dishes. I went to an engagement party they catered, and there were mini-quiches and all sorts of other goodies that are not traditional "pizza shop" fare. It's under supervision of the Vaad HaRabanim of Raritan Valley.

And as vallevin suggested, if you reheat the food in your own oven, please check with your kosher guest about procedure. S/he may want the food to be double-wrapped in foil or have other specifications.

It is kind of you to consider the needs of your kosher guest, and I'm sure s/he greatly appreciates it!

You could also check out the Orchid (out of Metuchen?) for some beautiful veg catering

I'd be cautious about relying on a fleishig restaurant for vegetarian catering. I admit that I have never eaten at Orchid and their menu has more than one vegetarian entree but I have never come across a fleishig restaurant or caterer who does good, flavorful vegetarian food beyond salatim. Anyone who thinks a heap (pardon me, "pyramid") of cooked vegetables and scoop of plain rice is a worth what caterers charge has put exactly zero thought into the dish.

I have personally enjoy the Orchid's catering for not only vegetarian but also vegan events. It is outstanding. In the future, it might be better to leave commenting to your personal experiences rather than ideas. This way, the most practical advice is available to the asker.
