where to take an out-of-towner that's not Mexican

I have a friend visiting who has never been to Dallas. We will be able to go out for a few nights for dinner. I was wondering if there is a place that's distinctly Dallas that has good food and drinks. It can't be a Mexican place. I would like a cool atmosphere too. So far the suggestions I've gotten are The Porch and St. Ann.

Try Bolsa or Smoke in Oak Cliff. Can't go wrong with either.

However, the newly opened, Private Social was really buzzing when I drove by last night about 10:00PM. Must be the hottest ticket in town right now! It would be my first choice.
