I think Winsor is great. Had lunch ther eyesterday and ordered enough for today..which reheated great.

I'm not an Asian but was introduced to dim sum 35 yrs ago in NYC Chinatown.. Carts were all I knew ( they counted the plates and gave you a bill). Great experience but a place likes Winsor cooks everyting to order and it's always piping hot.

Winsor is my favorite in Boston.

I think China Pearl is very good too for cart style...but they're friends, so take it with a grain of salt.

Hei La Moon had a brief period of "best of" but no more.

Went to Hei La Moon last weekend. Was completely underwhelmed by variety of foods compared to, say Chau Chow city. Especially in the shumai and assorted dumplings - there were about 3 different ones, all but one with pork. This is Sunday, around 1PM. Waiting for carts to come around took forever too.

Very odd feel, didn't like it, wouldn't go back.

I also went to Hei La Moon last weekend - I thought it was quite good.

I agree that the variety of steamed dumplings was lacking, and the ones we tried weren't that special. However, we had excellent baked pork buns (maybe best I've had anywhere in Boston, and definitely better than the steamed ones which we also tried). Also enjoyed the fried things - particularly the sesame donut with red bean, and a green version of the same donut (which contained durian, which I loved and everyone else at my table hated). But if you are a durian fan, you should definitely try these.

We were at Hei La Moon at noon on Saturday, and it was quite crowded, but no wait. I'd definitely go back, but I wouldn't say I would choose it over Winsor, Chau Chow or China Pearl. I think they all have strengths and weaknesses.

Oh, Durian... My colleagues had tried to make me eat it over the years in Singapore, but it smells like dead body to me. I've read that people actually have two very strong reactions to the smell of durian and that forever determines whether they like it or not.

Did not try the fried buns, the steamed ones were OK, nothing special. Did like the salt and pepper shrimp, though.

BTW, the price was about 30% higher than what we usually end up with at Chau Chow. But that could have been a fluke.

well dave, that's the tipping point for me. baked pork bao and red bean filled donuts- i am finally going to try it now, though the most serious of Boston CH dimsum fans- seem to not be v happy w/ it these days. at least i'll try those 2 things. th you.

Two other good things at Hei La Moon were the steamed rice noodle rolls filled with donut, and the mochi (the mango ones in particular).

All of the steamed dumplings we had there (har gau, shumai, mushroom/pork, etc) were mediocre, although this might have been partly because they were in the carts for too long.

But yeah, the baked pork buns at Hei La Moon are worth it.

                    2nd the mango mochi.

The rice noodles w/ spare ribs in black bean sauce is pretty good too.

I always feel like I've been MSG bombed hard afterwards though...dry mouth and headaches :-P I don't get that at Windsor which I'm sure uses MSG as well...

i generally avoid the steamed items if I find myself at Hei La Moon. I do like their pan fried fish dumpling.

dave, i can't tell if you're jibing me, or if it's a typo:
"steamed rice noodle rolls filled with donut"???? could you describe this dish?
                        .
And how would you compare the baked pork bao between winsor and hei la moon? the latter's have chopped, not ground, filling?sounds like i'll just do a hei la moon takeout order; th you:)

Rice noodle rolls filled with donut: http://i33.tinypic.com/50slu1.jpg

It's just like it sounds, rice noodle rolls filled with Chinese fried dough/donut. They have it at Winsor too I think....and I've had it at China Pearl. Pretty common at a lot of places.

I haven't had the baked pork bun at Winsor, so I can't make that comparison. I think the filling at Hei La Moon was chopped too, not ground...it was pretty red and pretty sweet.

Hope that helps! Oh, also, I don't think the rice noodle roll w/ donut would be very good takeout, since it would get cold quick and the donut would lose its crispiness. But the baked pork buns would be fine for takeout.

                  Is that you, Yogi Berra?

Winsor is good, but it's a small place and isn't cart-style dim sum if that's what you're looking for. However, most reviews on this forum tend to agree it's one of the better places to enjoy dim sum. You can search and find dozens of opinions on this place. As noted though, just be prepared for a wait, especially if you're group will be larger than 4-6 people.

One of my favorites, especially anything with noodles, silver pin noodles, and/or XO sauce.

winsor has silver pin noodles???i've not seen them there- rice flour noodles hand rolled into 2" pencils with pointed ends, mixed w/ egg and slivered veggies, served under a glass bowl??

Uh oh! You made me go back over my memories and I may have misled you. It is possible I am thinking of the silver pin noodles from Gitlo's and then the little rice noodle nubs at Winsor in XO sauce, and conflating them. If I could go tomorrow and check for you I would--that's the best kind of errand--but I probably won't be able to. If they have them, they are on the specials menu. Sorry for the confusion.
