Hawksworth Coffe Joint

  • 5

I was walking past the empty space in the ground floor at the Hotel Georgia and saw a couple of architechty looking guys. Stopped and asked if Thomas Szasz was moving back in, and they told me that David Hawskworth will be opening a coffee shop.

  1. Yes, that is Bel Cafe (named after his wife Annabel, apparently). Supposed to open the end of October according to the Hotel Georgia website.

    1. Sorry about the typos.

I meant to type Coffee and "Thomas Haas", but it had been a long week.

      1. Opened today. I'lI check it out next week.

I stopped by today for a takeout coffee. I had my mind on something with some African notes, as it was afternoon. They had a "Spicy Viennese Espresso" on the menu that I though might fit the bill. It was a labour-intensive single shot with some whipped cream, all very artfully done. Flavour was fine, good acidity and body. I think they are serving 49th Parallel exclusively.

Space is very nice, staff are still a bit discombobulated. There is a lot of baking and food available that looked great. Good spot for a quick lunch, energetic and buzzy. Not ground-breaking in the coffee department, but solid and dependable.

Went to pick up lunch there today. Agree that the staff - bountiful in numbers - runs around quite needlessly, though that'll probably be worked out quickly enough.

Had a roast pork sandwich, which was quite good: the bread deserves commendation. Also had a macaron, which was lighter and crunchier than others around town. All in all, a pretty good first impression.
