Paese or Tutti Matti

Coming into the city for dinner with friends. Trying to decide between Paese (King St.) or Tuttie Matti for dinner. There will be four of us and we are looking for good food, relaxing atmosphere, and fair prices.

What would your choice be?
Thanks.

Thanks everyone. We ended up at Paese and really enjoyed it. I agree it is basic Italian food, but it was really good food. I had the caprese salad to start and it was so fresh and clean tasting. Just the right amount of salt to bring out the flavours. My DH had the octopus and it was fabulous. I was surprised how tender it was and it had a spicy kick to it.

For mains, DH and friend had the veal ravioli with butter sage sauce. It was nice but the sage was not very noticeable. Other friend had the veal scallopini and he seemed to really enjoy. I had the ricotta gnocchi and devoured every bite! They were so light and the sauce was so creamy. Though I did find the chunks of chicken a little off putting.

We shared the chocolate cake with hazelnuts for dessert and it was wonderful.

The Sommelier was a little disappointing. He didn't really engage us in a dialogue when we asked for his opinion. Our friend mentioned one he was thinking of and the Sommelier responded "sure". In fairness he did bring another bottle to the table as a suggestion along with the one we ordered. I think we ended up selecting the other option and was very nice.

Overall it was an enjoyable experience and I would be happy to recommend and visit again.

Depending on what dishes one order, both restaurants can be good, so-so or even bad! However, there's one major difference between the two and that is the wine list! If you are into wine and love to have something a bit special to go with the food, then I'll pick Paese over Tutti Matti. Paese's list of Italian wines is mighty impressive!

I'd probably go with Paese because their food has never disappointed me, although some of the current pastas at Tutti Matti look interesting.

Their menus are quite different- Tutti Matti tends to be more of a contemporary/innovative/eclectic take on Tuscan food, using more rabbit, lamb, etc., whereas Paese sticks to more of the classics, and sticks to veal, chicken, pork, beef. Which menu will work better for you and your friends?

I always find my food at Paese boring. The price point is lower for sure so I tend to expect less but it is never better than fine to me.

I agree that the food is more boring at Paese, but they do their boring food well.

I haven't been to Tutti Matti in a while, but I was so disappointed when their kitchen wrecked a perfectly good piece of fish by overcooking it severely. I don't know if someone forgot that it was in the oven- it certainly should not have made it to the table. I should have complained after it was served, but I don't send food back, mostly because I don't want to create an opportunity for a disgruntled employee to spit in my food. This experience was ages ago, and hopefully there's been turnover in the kitchen staff since then. I realize the Chef is talented and that the overcooking was probably done by someone relatively inexperienced, at the bottom of the kitchen hierarchy. I have had decent pastas at Tutti Matti since the dried-out fish, but I now stick to pasta or meat, rather than fish, when I'm at Tutti Matti.

What dishes would you recommend the most at Tutti Matti?

That sucks. I hate sending back food as well and really rarely do it. I've never ordered fish there as I love the pasta and their dishes that have beans and tomato sauce. Soooo goood!

I really like Tutti Matti so that would be my pick.
