Lula's Latin Cuisine- Dumont, NJ (Bergen County)

My dude and I at there a couple of days ago. We wanted to sample their offerings, so we ordered way too much food, all of which we enjoyed. We split a cuban sandwich and I gotta say, as much as I love El Caney in Bergenfield, this one takes the best cuban sandwich award. Awesome.

I had the mofungo with chicken. I'd never had it before, but it was something I had been wanting to try since seeing Anthony Bourdain's tour of Puerto Rico. Mofunogo was supertasty (how can you go wrong with fried, then smashed & seasoned plantain?) and chicken was great. My dude had the oxtail- very good- along with yellowrice and blackbeans. Also very good (though in a head-to-head, I think El Caney's win the black bean award). We shared a plate of tostones- good, but I wasn't super crazy about the mojito sauce served with them.

Lula's makes its own hot sauce- good stuff- very hot!

All that food, and I think our bill was less than $30 (plus we had lunch for the next day). We'll be back.

We've been there when El Caney was closed, and I thought it was a good substitute, though a bit pricier. The pernil from the steam tray was off the charts, and like you said the mofongo rocks. It's great to have a place close by where you can get stuff like that- not just Cuban, but Puerto Rican, Dominican specialties as well. Personally I think the Cubano at El Caney is better, but this is a case where I think the bread choice makes all the difference (Lula's uses what looks like ordinary hero bread, as opposed to the Cuban style), but this one was good in a pinch. Overall we liked everything and vowed to return as well.

I honestly don't get why I see people putting this area down as a culinary dead zone, it seems to be so thriving to me with little joints like this all over the place. Between Dumont, Bergenfield, Hackansack, west Englewood, etc., I'd have endless choice of places to explore if I wasn't across the river most of the week. Glad to see some of these come up on this board.

Sounds like this place might be right up your alley........I stopped by last week and they had a $5 lunch menu.....including oxtails. I did not partake, but intend to do so very soon.
