TOFTT - Dragon King (Kelowna)

It was a one day visit to Kelowna visiting family and well, this place was new-ish (couple of months old) and strategically located on the 97, a little past the bridge in Kelowna. That and the sign said dim sum which I'm a huge sucker for (being chronically deprived by my choice of residence).

There's a nice sized parking lot next to the building, which apparently has made it a favourite stopping place for Chinese tourist buses, in our hour long lunch, 3 separate groups were present and later on driving by, another bus was parked in the lot. Good sign that hordes of Chinese tourists are being fed there? Who knows...

The interior is pretty clean and modern, there are a lot of larger round tables and only a handful of smaller 2/4 tops. Service was an issue straight off the bat. There's no person assigned to handle incoming guests so we did see quite a few people walk right back out the door after standing there with no one paying them any heed. And when the server has to walk around and check every table's dining order (which is printed out and left on your table) in order to deliver your dim sum, well, you can imagine how long that takes.

Onto the food, where we stuck to dim sum. It's a fairly short list of items, the basics really. Fresh steamed to order which was nice but was a little slow. We had hot & sour soup, chicken's feet, siu mai, sticky rice with chicken and the fried dumplings. All were good to average with the fried dumplings being poor as they couldn't get a crispy bottom on the dumplings so they were rather limp. The hot & sour soup was pretty well balanced in flavour between hot and sour but came out with an unnaturally red tinge to it, tasted good and was chock full of the usual stuff, wood ear fungus, pork, carrots, tofu, green onions, peas, so they aren't skimpy on the ingredients.

Overall, if you're in the Okanagan area, it doesn't seem that bad but what would keep me from coming back immediately is the service. They speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin and the menu is pretty clear. I'd be curious to try their larger dishes one day. But for now, I know where I can get a dim sum fix in.

  1. Thanks for TOFTT bdachow.

    1. We should add that this is the same "Dragon King" that has been open on Bernard Avenue for many years, and have now moved into a bigger and more modern location.

Oh thanks for the note. I'd only noted Dim Sum at Ken's(?) years ago but didn't see it on my one day sprint through Kelowna this time. Guess it closed. It was really my cousin's idea as she lives there and couldn't convince anyone to go with her, except me. :)
