Honolulu honeymoon - restaurants

Hello -

My fiance and I will be heading to the Royal Hawaiian for our honeymoon at the beginning of November.

We love food and have a "hit list" of restaurants we'd like to go to.

For dinners we are thinking:
Chef Mavro
Town
Azure
Alan Wongs

Any other suggestions/input? We will be there for five nights.

We are looking to keep lunches casual but would love suggestions within walking distance (2 miles or so) from the hotel.

Thanks!
Aly

for casual and less expensive i'd include puka dog, fatty's chinese kitchen, and teddy's bigger burgers. If you want to walk a ways beyond the edge of waikiki, then try rainbow drive in (just over a mile), or even further away south shore grill (a mile and a half), pleasant walks to both. In the other direction is ala moana center and ward center. Ala Moana is about a mile and a half, ward center two and a half.

Of that list, Alan Wong's is head and shoulders above the rest. I would add la Mer at the Halekulani over either Azure or Chef Mavro and maybe even Orchids, also at the Halekulani, over them as well.

If I was going to Kaimuki, I'd do 3660 on the Rise over Town and I'd look at Salt Kitchen & Tasting Bar as well.

While I like Roy's Waikiki, Roy's Hawaii Kai is much better IMHO.

I'd also throw Michel's into the mix for romance and location or the Hau Tree Lanai next door to it.

For casual lunch, we like Duke's Barefoot Bar (great location, okay burgers), Me's BBQ (Korean BBQ), Marukame Udon, Ramen Nakamura, Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin and Ezogiku. You could also walk up to the McCully Shopping Center that has every kind of Asian food you can name.

Casual, but not cheap for lunch, would be the House Without a Key, Banyan Courtyard at the Moana and Surf Lanai at the Royal Hawaiian. The ambiance at all three is just great.

        Hi everyone -

Thanks for the feedback! The list is growing.

We'll likely go to Azure on our first night as it will be easy after a long flight.

We'll be sure to go to Halekulani.

Would you suggest making reservations before we go?

        Thanks again!

I will second La Mer, and especially for a honeymoon.

Be sure to tell the staff (at La Mer, AW's and Chef Mavro's) of the happy occasion, not for any "extras," but to alert them that the evening IS special.

Just did Chef Mavro's (the "Classics Tasting Menu), Alan Wong's (Full Tasting Menu), La Mer (Full Tasting Menu), and all were great. With but a dish here, and a dish there, they were nearly perfect. Even those little "mis-steps" yielded good, to very good dishes, just not quite up to the rest of the meals.

Have not yet down Town, but over the years, 3660 has always come through for us - however the last meal was a few trips ago.

Now, and this is from some high-placed sources' recs., but I hear that Orchids (Halekulani) is great for dinner. We have only dined there for breakfast, lunch and brunch (Sunday), but those sources indicate that we have missed something special. I have no reason to doubt them..

Most of all, enjoy, travel safely and congratulations!

Aloha and Congrat's on your upcoming wedding!
We usually stay at the beloved Royal Hawaiian and it's a wonderful place to stay..especially since the remodel.
Mai Tai bar is wonderful for lunch.. cold beer and mai tai's.

Roy's across the way is one of the best and not your typical Roy's and Diva, the GM, is one of the sweetest people on the island with so much aloha spirit.
We love Happy Hour at Hula Grill, Duke's, Rumfire and Top of Waikiki..
House without a key for drinks and app's at Halekulani resort next door...brunch is nice.

Rent a car for the day and go to North Shore for the best crack on a plate, garlic shrimp at Giovanni's food truck...the line is long but goes quickly and they built a new covered patio.

Beach Chick and russkar are completely correct in suggesting Roy's Waikiki.

I dunno, having been to both Hawaii Kai and Waikiki, I'd have to opt for Hawaii Kai as well. Waikiki isn't bad, but it isn't as good as Hawaii Kai.

Happy Hour at the Top of Waikiki and Duke's are great, Moose's isn't bad for drinking at Happy Hour either.

Check the Friday edition of Pulse in the HNL Star Advertiser for the "pau hana" (Hawaiian for "end of work" or Happy Hour) specials.

We frequent everything on your list regularly, especially Azure. They are all good. We have mixed feelings about Town but it's good for lunch. I would also include Michel's (view is unsurpassed, ask for a oceanfront table) and take a taxi to Le Bistro which has some of the best French Food on the Island.
Suntory for lunch is nice along with Wolfgangs for a burger. aloha

Add: Roy's (waikiki) to your list for dinner. Its ofter overlooked but it's one of only 2 that are privately owned by Roy on Oahu and the food is always good. Il Lupino has a wicked Meatball during Happy Hour along with other offerings if your not super hungry. Located in Royal Hawaiian Center.
