Staying at Riviington Lower East Side: Great Bar? Great Food?
I come to town and stay downtown regularly. I am looking for an awesome Bar/food place that is hip and not too expensive. Need not be super trendy just great drinks and great food and fair prices.
I heard of PEOPLE on Allen Street from some friends. They say the short ribs are awesome. I will check it out but would love feedback from all of you.
Any word here? Other suggestions?
Schiller's Liquor Bar would be a good option for you.

Not bars, by strict definition, but both these places have more than enough good food to go with good drinks:
Stanton Social - have good greater than tapas-size dishes with more than decent cocktails menu and areas with a lounge-like ambiance.
Inoteca - a great place for good-to-very-good Italian small-plates. Good Italian wine list, too, where they sometime have mature/old bottles at surprisingly reasonable prices. Also have a nice small bar portion in the restaurant where 3 or 4 can comfortably park with food and chat with barkeep.

Second both Stanton Social and Inoteca. You know, there are really quite a few decent dishes at Stanton Social. It's not as hip as it used to be, but their food works in a pinch.

Your friends are right. I've been to PEOPLE and the short ribs is a must. I would also recommend their specialty drink, called the "firecracker", pretty cool tea infused concoction served in one of those old chinese licquor bottles and meant for 2 or more people. other dishes i love are the salt n pepper shrimp and vietnamese pork sliders.
