Does anyone know of a restaurant serving rijsttafel in Chicago?
I recently had it in Amsterdam and it was delicious.

The Rice Table will be holding a special rijsttafel dinner (their "first authentic rijsttafel") on Sunday, October 23. You can buy tickets in advance for $45 on their website at www.thericetable.com/events.php You can save $5 by buying tickets in advance today through Saturday in person at The Rice Table.

Thank you so much for the heads up on this. I appreciate it.

Thanks again to both Chowhound and nstasy for the information. I jumped on the chance to attend the Oct. 23 dinner and found out this morning that only 10 seats were still available. I took 4 so as of 11:00 today there were only 6 left.

I was introduced to rijsttafel in Amsterdam in 1965 and have looked forward to finding something similar in Chicago. So I am hoping that this upcoming meal will be a success. Don

So, you had your meal. How was it? My favorite meal in my 51 years was a rijsttafel dinner in a small, perhaps 4 table restaurant in Amsterdam around 1985. My parents took my family to Europe and we found this place using Rick Steve's guides. Never had this meal since then but think of it often. No other meal has had that affect on me.

I'm a missionary in rural Haiti with very limited food options. I research where I would like to eat while stateside and plan to get to Chicago next trip home to West Michigan. So, so, eager to hear how the meal was. Thanks.

For others - I will also be in the Detroit, Atlanta, Hilton Head, and points in between, if you know where to partake of this meal.

Don, after I posted I realized it was two years ago.

      2. You also might find it by checking with Vincent, our only Dutch restaurant. www.vincentchicago.com

You probably know this, nsxtasy, but rijsttafel isn't a Dutch dish. It is Indonesian. It's found commonly in Amsterdam because Indonesia was once a Dutch colony. It's been many years since I've been in the Netherlands, but the memory of that wonderful meal still lives strong.

Not strictly true. Before my post above, I had looked it up in Wikipedia, and there it says that it's a Dutch adaptation of an Indonesian feast called nasi padang, and discusses its origins in the Dutch colonization of Indonesia. The Wikipedia entry also notes, "Despite its popularity in the Netherlands and abroad, the rijsttafel is rarely found in Indonesia." You can read more about the history of rijsttaffel, typical plates, and other information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rijsttafel

Between the Dutch part of its origins, and the presence of Indonesian dishes on the menu at Vincent, I would think it's worth giving them a call to express your interest. I bet they can come up with something for you.

Rijsttafel is not dutch food, it is Indonesian. Maybe one could call it "Indonesian found in the Netherlands" at best.

        2. This website lists some US restaurants serving Rijstaffel.
