Jumbo Clam Fritters

DEBSII Sep 26, 2011 06:48 AM

Yesterday, I had the most amazing fried clams. The menu said 'like Howard Johnson's' , but they were HUGE, Like the size of my fingers!! Not minced either. They were absolutely delicious and tender. I was wondering two things:

1-Could these have really been clams?

2-Can I mail order them from somewhere?

There are all kinds of edible clams, some over 10 lbs in size (e.g., geoduck clams). I often see very large clams for sale in Chinese markets. A clam that is the size of a finger is not unusual.

I love fried clams. Where did you get yours?

I could not believe how tender they were, considering their size. A place in Monticello, NY called The Nugget. Their Website is TheNuggetMonticello.com.

They are probably clam bellys which are the whole clam breaded and fried. Most places clams that have been sliced into strips and fried. I prefer the clam bellys.
There is a local place in Riverhead, Buoy One, that makes the clam bellys.

I've had bellies, in Boston, I don't like them. These were just GIANT clam strips.

It seems like your best bet would be to call the restaurant and ask them...
