Great addition to the north country
Those of us who live north of the notch (franconia) are food deprived. But now there's a great new addition to the restaurant choices: Terra in Bethlehem, NH. We had our first meal there last night; they opened four weeks ago. The setting is fine, though a bit noisy. The service was eager and excellent. The food was exceptionally good for this area. There were some interesting starter choices: smoked trout salad had frisee something crunchy (chinese noodles?), tantalizing horseradish dressing and good but somewhat sparse smoked trout. A small cobb salad with the same dressing was wonderful. One of us had duck breast with excellent fresh, not frozen, duck breast perfectly cooked with a green and fingerlings; another had a "porterhouse" pork chop which she declared was the best pork, ever, sitting on top of fall vegetable hash, and the third had a very excellent hamburger. We followed these up with goat cheesecake, an excellent choice.
Food is mostly locally sourced, which explains the great pork and burger (duck no doubt from Canada) and the salads.
If you are passing through on a fall foliage tour, or, more importantly, if you live up here and will be here over the winter dine at Terra to keep it going until I'm here next summer.
I SOOOO wanted to love this restaurant and there were a lot of pro's that I did enjoy. Great location, beautiful interior, friendly service and AMAZING menu! But myself and two other brunch companions ordered the cheeseburger (two medium rare and one medium) and they all came out severely overcooked. The two medium rares were medium well and my medium was more than well done. So much so that I didn't finish it.
I know...we should have said something. So I can fault myself for that. We will DEFINITELY be back because I have heard wonderul things about the place. And want to give the place another shot by trying some of their amazing menu items.
It just put a bad taste in my mouth (literally) that it was my first visit and they couldn't get the burger right. :( Hopefully our next visit will be better!
I have heard nothing but AMAZING things about Terra so I definitely assumed my bad burger was just an unfortunate and VERY rare occurrence. I think that contributed to my let down too...I was expecting great things from all that I had heard. We do plan on going back and giving it another try!
