About 30 miles NW of Joplin is Pittsburgh, KS. Two of the great chicken joints in this country are there. Chicken Mary and Chicken Annie.

Those were both on a Food Network Challenge type show.

I would LOVE to hit those.

You might try the Red Onion Cafe. It may have the best food.

One place I have on my list to try is Cafe on the Route in Baxter Springs.

If you wanted a couple of places that are truly Joplin ---
Fred and Reds-all they have is chile, tamales and hamburgers. My favorite is tamale deluxe. You eat it with crackers, which come heated. The seating is very limited though.

Good Luck. The ones I was going to recommend were hit by the Tornado in May.

I have to agree with that. I drove through 3 weeks ago. Much of the South side of the town was destroyed and that is the side closest to the freeway. If you can drive an hour up the road to Lebanon, there's Dowd's whose specialty is wonderful catfish.
