A good cheap breakfast between DCA and Mount Vernon

I will be picking up a car around 7:00 am at DCA and going to Mount Vernon I love good local cafes for breakfast. Tell me your favorites no chains please

Mama's Kitchen on Fordson Rd. in the Hybla Valley area of Alexandria. I think breakfast is only served on weekends though.

Royal Diner and Table Talk are pretty blah. There's a Greek diner in a shopping center on Glebe Road (just a little out of the way) that isn't bad.

What's the diner on Glebe? When I need Greek diner stuff, I usually end up at Atlantis on King Street since it's always open. There's also Olympians near Fort Belvoir, but neither are particularly easy to get to from Mount Vernon. Primo in Belle View used to be pretty good, and it's right off GW Parkway, but the new owner pretty much screwed everything up. Never had problems at Table Talk or The Royal, but it's pretty hard to screw up an omelette.

Oh, I think it is really easy to screw up an omelet, which is why I rarely order them at a diner. I just think that Table Talk and the Royal are blah, not bad, but I never think about going there. The diner is next to El Custatleco on Glebe Road in Arlington where the Giant. It's not fanstatic, but I enjoyed it the time I went. I would go back there, but we have breakfast pretty well covered at home, so there isn't much need for going out for it.

I like Table talk. Really an institution. Standard diner fare nothing amazing but all around solid.

Elsie's Magic Skillet on Route 1 in Alexandria (on the way to Mount Vernon, close if not in the Mount Vernon area). It's a hole in the wall, smells a little like stale smoke but the food is good and cheap. It's been around for a long time.

I know you said no chains but if you're a donut person, you'll pass the original Krispy Kreme on Route 1, if you're a fan.

You're right. It used to be closer to OldTown. I used to live behind the one near Bailey's Crossroads, which was built in the early sixties. I always thought their donuts were way too sugary.

Royal Restaurant does a nice breakfast buffet on the weekend. Standard diner fare, nothing exotic. They've been around for about 100 years in various locations in Old Town. The rest of the menu can be hit or miss but the breakfasts are solid.

In Alexandria, try Buzz or Misha's. They're easy to get to and have good cofee and pastries.
