If you had to pick, Scarpetta or Crispo?? HELP??

s
serenity0055 Sep 22, 2011 04:20 PM

Going out to dinner with 7 ppl for a 40th Bday... Want really GOOD Italian food, not crazy expensive or foo foo.

I have narrowed it down based on much research and reviews to Scarpetta or Crispo. Someone make up my mind...

or maybe a better suggestion???

Step up from Carmines but not a Babbo or Marea :)

Thx!!!!!!!

We ate as 8 at Scarpetta in Sept and I thought it was fabulous. The food was superb and innovative. The service was terrific. We loved the vibe and had a great night. I think you'd have a great time!

The service and ambiance at Crispo is not on the same level as Scarpetta. I happen to love the food at Crispo, but Scarpetta is in a different league. Also, the indoor space at Crispo is only just okay. The back patio is by far the better room, but it's quite rustic.

        @ coasts

So would you say better food at Crispo, trendier ambience at Scarpetta?
Scarpetta is a little pricer, but I would rather pay for better food..

Been to both, Scarpetta is in a different league in a good way. Much better than Crispo on all levels in my opinion.

Agreed. Scarpetta is also in the same price range as Babbo, though less expensive than Marea.

But if the OP is looking for a "step up from Carmine's" with solid food and good value, he or she might be happier at Crispo.

Oh didn't realize Scarpetta is in the same price range as Babbo.. Now even more confused, should just go to Babbo.

Ugh I just can't make up my mind bc i'm not paying. Was just asked to make the Res.. I guess Scarpetta is in the lead.. Thanks everyone :)

Well, Scarpetta is a lot easier res than Babbo, for one, if that's a factor at all.

Agree w/ everyone that Scarpetta is better than Crispo. Also don't forget their famous and fabulous bread basket, which practically ensures no one leaves Scarpetta hungry.

Babbo also won't take parties larger than 6, so it won't work for the OP.

So Is there any other reco you can make thats comparable with price and food of Crispo but maybe with a more vibrant, less romantic ambiance?
                thx :)

I haven't been to Morandi. Hope you report back if you decide to go there.

Locanda Verde is great, though a bit pricier than Crispo.

I think you might like Osteria Morini as well.

I found Osteria Morini to be very loud and crowded. Crowded enough that the back of your chair touches the back of your neighbor's chair sometimes.

Locanda Verde, Babbo, and Scarpetta are all in the same approximate price range (entrees around $30).

However, the portions at Scarpetta are pretty generous (like they are at Babbo). At Scarpetta I've split a secondi or even skipped the secondi all together because I was full.

Something in between Crispo and Scarpetta... Maybe Pepolino?

How much space between tables at Dell Anima?
Scarpetta sounds fabulous but beyond my budget.
Are there any other good candidates not on the lists above?

Scarpetta is definitely more expensive than Babbo, and only slightly less so than Marea.

Crispo is about friends, family and comfort. Scarpetta is about high-gloss, glamor and sophistication.

Respectfully disagree. Although I admit to some sophistication, I am not high-gloss or glamorous nor do I like places that are all about the look or vibe. I find Scarpetta very comfortable, the service very attentive and warm, and the food delicious.

I can't vouch for Scarpetta because I haven't dined there yet. But I have been to Crispo, the setting was on the casual side but the food was very good. I'd probably classify it more as a good value with solid food, rather than a fancy/expensive/froo place. I took some friends of the family out to dinner whom requested Northern Italian fare, everyone loved their meal but it was far enough in the past where I can't really remember what everyone ordered. They have a very good roasted bone marrow app and the seafood was perfectly prepared- I vaguely remember a john dory dish and a shrimp dish among what was ordered.
