Cake Recommendations

I was wondering if anyone had any Cake recommendations for a special family celebration. We are having out of town guest and would love to have a good taste of Philly while they are here. Thanks!

The Italian Rum cake at Isgro's is to die for- but you must special order and ask for a layer of ricotta cannoli filling in it. SO good. Also, on a grocery store level, the Ultimate White Cake at Wegman's is really yummy.

Don't know if it's convenient but I'm hearing marvelous things about Sweet Elizabeth's in Manayunk. I have several friends who have ordered cakes from them and rave equally about the flavor AND the unique decorating. From everything I've heard, you won't be disappointed. Just this week I was with 7 friends and 3 of them had ordered cakes from there for special occasions in the last month (well one event is this weekend). And they each are at least 20-30 minutes away from Manayunk but think it's well worth the drive.

        +1 on Sweet Elizabeth's.

While I haven't actually had their cake before, the fiance & I are burning through our savings on their cupcakes. And the cake's that I've seen have all looked exquisite.

I don't know what location is convenient for you, but we love Night Kitchen in Chestnut Hill. They have excellent cakes, tarts, cupcakes, cookies, sticky buns, etc.

Termini's in Reading Terminal does excellent traditional Italian cakes but has a wonderful raspberry pound cake they do over the summer. It's not overpowering and is delicious.

+1 for termini's at either the Reading Terminal or S. 8th street (cool retro store if you've never been)

Another bump for Termini's. Italian Rum Cake is YUM!. Best pastry shop in Philly, imo. If you want the full lineup of desserts, go straight to their main South 8th St store (not the Reading Terminal location, which only carries a select amount of their stock).

What do they have at 8th St. that they don't have at RTM other than the truffles? I know that the selection at Comcast is pared down a little but I thought they have the full compliment of treats at RTM.

Perhaps a visit to 8th St. may be in order...

As an aside, Termini's just came out with a pumpkin coffee cake. And it's very good!

At RTM, they do have a nice selection but sometimes they don't choose to bring select items (really at their discretion).

For example, I was looking for an Italian Rum cake the last time I was visiting family in Philly from DC, and they pointing me to the main 8th St location because they chose not to bring any that particular day. When I went to 8th St to get my fix, my unofficial eye noted quite a bit more diversity than RTM.

Also I can imagine that they only bring limited quantities of select stuff too to RTM, which if it sells out quickly, that you'll find more quantity (or the ability to perhaps make it for you) at the main 8th St location.

I like Flying Monkey in the Reading Terminal Market. I had them make me a basic yellow cake and chocolate buttercream icing for my birthday in August and it was absolutely delicious. They also do more exciting flavors, including the pumple. I also got some whoopie pies from them for the same party and they were a hit.
