Top Chef Texas

This season bring way more cheftestants (25+) and new judges. I'm excited to see how they're going to deal with so many chefs, but I'm a little sad that we're not going to see Eric Ripert and Anthony Bourdain back as judges.

By eliminating all but 16 before the actual competition starts.

They've done this before, but not with so many. I think it's a dumb and cruel way to start the season.

      1. re: LurkerDan

I know it's not going to happen, but I kinda wish they'd go back to just 12, as in Season 1. Sixteen is too many to keep track of/tell apart at the start, and cuts the amount of time they spend on the cooking of each. They don't even usually show the tasting of everyone's quickfire dishes at the start.

        1. re: Caitlin McGrath

Plus, 16 means that there have to be more group challenges to keep things manageable. I'd like 12, too.

          1. re: kahudson

You could always start watching when there are 12 contestants left in the competition.

        2. re: LurkerDan

They started with 17 that started TC 5 and they elmiated one before the first elimnation challenge, but I think that is the only time they did something like this. I wonder how they will get from 29 contestants down to a more manageable number and will that number be 16 or 18 like last time (or more)?

            1. re: huiray

The Wikipedia entry did not list the 29 as 'hopefuls' but it does not make sense to start with that many. They have not eliminated anyone before the first elimination challenge since TC 5 so I suppose it makes sense that they will start with 16 again.

The official press release from Bravo, which is cited in full by, might be worth reading. Just sayin'.

Here's the link to the press release itself:

The OP mentioned 25+ contestants and I wrote an inconsequential post about how TC was conducted in the past. You replied that they narrowed the field to 16 and I replied in agreement with you. When did I indicate anything saying I "...won't believe folks reporting on it..."?

                  1. re: John E.

Looks like I edited my post while you were typing. :-)
(shrug) I was wondering why one might think it could be 18 or even more actual contestants when it has already been established that there would be 16. ;-)
                    Eh, storm in a teacup.

                    1. re: huiray

Did you see season 5? They narrowed it down BEFORE the first elimination. You're right, it is not important, but I think you missed my point.

                      1. re: John E.

FWIW, I don't think I missed your point. My point was that it has been established that it will be 16 actual contestants, howsoever they do it starting from 29 wannabes, but you were still wondering whether it would be 16, or 18, or more, when you first responded in this subthread. I was poking at you a little on this but you didn't seem to see what I was getting at. :-)
                        p.s. Yes, I saw season 5.

                        1. re: huiray

I did not read any sub-thread, only what has been posted here and the TC Wikipedia entry. It's not particularily important anyway, just as you implied.

                      2. re: huiray

It sounds to me like there will be 29 on the first episode, but only 16 will move on from there.

                        1. re: donovt

It would seem so. Look, what you said has already been established, declared to be so by Bravo in its press releases (see my links in a previous post), affirmed by folks elsewhere, the "16" was even stated by the first responder in this thread, etc etc. I wasn't waffling about the numbers. I was querying, in a way, why John E was still postulating it could be 16, or 18, or more who would be competing (see his post here in response to the poster who already said it was to be 16: . ((shrug)). Enuf.

                          1. re: huiray

Wby do you seem so obsessed with something so trivial?

                            1. re: John E.

I'm not. I thought, however, that donovt was responding after we had put an end to it and it is just now that I see that his post is dated Sep 23. Obviously I didn't remember reading his post before.

        3. will be interesting having two chefs from MOTO on the same season! have they ever had two cheftestants from the same resto at once before?

Were the two women that were a couple in TC 4 work at the same restaurant?

            1. re: John E.

If you mean Jen and Zoi (TC4), no, they didn't work at the same restaurant. Jen worked in San Francisco, commuting in from Sonoma County, and Zoi was working at Bovolo and Zazu restaurants in Sonoma County, both spots owned by John Stewart and Duskie Estes (she of Next Iron Chef fame, and they together winners of this year's Cochon). Jen and Zoi broke up about the same time as the TC4 ended, and Zoi moved back up to Seattle.

            2. re: mattstolz

In Season 5 (I think?), Hosea Rosenberg and Melissa Harrison both worked for restaurants that are less than a block from each other in Boulder, CO and have commonly ownership (Jax and Centro, respectively). Part of a local restaurant group called the "Big Red F" restaurants. I'm sure they were well acquainted with each other and had worked together, though not necessarily in the same kitchen at the same time.

              1. re: monopod

I think Melissa worked for Hosea after TC 5 too. I hope she was not making tuna tacos.

            3. STARTS NEXT WEEK! will our fearless leader Linda Whit be doing a recap this time around? oh please oh please oh please.... ?
