Tiramisu

  • 5

My husband and I love tirimusu and have always tried it at restaurants in the States. Now in Oct we are going to Venice where I hear the dish was invented. Any good places where we can find the best?

  1. For take out or eat standing up, check the pastry shops: Majer with 4 stores but the one in Santa Croce is the best (also their zuccotto in their frig), also in Santa Croce is Rio Marin; Melita in Castello, Gobetti in Dorsoduro, Rosa Salva in San Marco. Too bad that Tonolo does not make it but their must are their custard filled cream puffs, their filled donuts and their Foccacia de Venezia (available Thursday to Sunday; it is not an individual serving but must take one to your hotel room and have it as a snack).
For restaurants: the best I ever had (more than once) in Venice was at Alle Testiere; the other good one was at Fiaschetteria Toscana. Hope they are still serving it. The dessert is ubiquitous in every cafes as in many restaurants. After a couple of blahs, I really haven't explore it.

It was on the menu at Fiaschetteria Toscana last week and the people next to us ordered it and seemed to love it. The English menu labeled it as "Coffee cake".

Thank you you both on the tiramisu recommendations. "coffee cake" LOL. Since Fiaschetteria Toscana has been suggested by many and now I hear they have such good tiramisu I will make a reservation for one night there. Now I just have one more night and a few lunches to figure out.Last year we went for a week's drive through southern Italy. All our meals were suggestions from Chowhound and they were excellent.

Also, many gelaterias have a "tiramisu" gelato. Give it a try at Gelateria del Doge on Cp Santa Margherita (a branch of the pastry shop Majer for tiramisu is just a few doors down on Rio Tera), also Nico on the Zattere.
