Bondir or Craigie On Main?

I've narrowed my choice for an anniversary dinner to Bondir and Craigie on Main.

Two people, tommorow night.

Which would be a better choice?

Definitely Bondir. Much better atmosphere for an anniversary dinner IMO. We went to Craigie 2 nights prior to our wedding for out last night alone prior. It was not at all a memorable atmosphere or service. We were bummed. If you go to Bondir, get the bluefish they have been offering lately. It's the best bluefish prep I have ever tried.

I too love Bondir, which I have enjoyed twice. I've only been to the bar at Craigie on Main. The food was very good, but I agree that the atmosphere pales in comparison. It would be hard for me to compare the food at both, but Bondir is the restaurant I've been most excited about over the last year.

Both are great in their own way. Craigie has better, more inventive, and more adventurous food, IMO, but a less romantic atmosphere and a higher price point. I know people have complained about service / FOH issues at Craigie, but I have never experienced anything other than friendly and engaging service in 5 or so visits. Bondir is smaller and cozier and more romantic, and I really enjoyed the food on my one visit, but it was definitely less memorable than Craigie. I don't think you can go wrong - it just depends on how much you want to spend and what kind of experience you want.

i think the food styles are worlds apart between the two. Bondir's food is very very simple- just jus for the entrees- no wine, spirits/demi sauces. lovely lovely intimate interior and special service. I think COM's food is much more robust, with more complex sauces, and you're much more left to your own there.

I will stick up for Craigie in this fight. I just like their food better. Bondir is more intimate, and romantic, but my first priority is the food. And for all the pretensiousness claims heaped on Craigie, I must say that at Bondir, having the waiter explain what each ingredient in each dish was before we ordered, AND having the server go over it all again when the food was delivered and unnecessary.

Agree with kimfair1. Bondir is pleasant enough, but we find the food quite bland and ordinary. Craigie on Main is not as cozy - i.e., the room is larger - but the food is invariably sensational. Much more appropriate as an "occasion" destination. Bondir has more of an everyday, neighborhoodie vibe.

interestingly, perhaps tellingly, I read an interview with Tony Maw in the Improper Bostonian. His biggest gripe was with clients who treated the waitstaff poorly. I have always gotten good service there and like the food. I do not feel that hospitality, the willingness to be flexible, is job one there. Nonethless, the food is good, and i enjoy eating there.
