Japanese stoneware

Just back from another amazing trip to Japan. Restaurants often have beautiful stoneware dinner plates and dishes for rice, condiments and pickles. Beautiful glaze, drips and fire marks. Easy to find in Japan but hard to pack and bring home. Is there any good source for these in the US? Mostly interested in stoneware dinner plates with dark colors/glaze like for tonkatsu, or stoneware rice bowls.

  1. There are several places that sell Japanese stoneware, at different levels of quality and price. Here are a couple that sell very affordable stuff: (this one is Canadian, but they ship to the US).

Take a look, and see if that is what you are looking for.

Good suggestions. I would also add that Japantown would definitely carries a great selection of these items.

    2. Google it, I bought my whole everyday dishes from one site, I got the black ones with white kanji and a red stamp on it, squares, and got square bowls in 2 sizes. I think the site was Cherry Blossom something. I looked at hundreds literally before I bought. And I love plating up now, everytime I do it, and I've had them at least 5 years. Funny how something that simple can make you so happy. I get reds & whites & blacks to go with it. We seldom use the 12" sq plates, instead use the 9" ers for most of our meals. And the 12" plates have to be washed by hand as the spinning bar in the dishwasher hits them. As it also does with 4 triangular plates of the same pattern. We have chips on some corners.
