Come Spring Cafe: Union Maine (plus two other local places)

On our way to the Rockland/Rockport area we passed through Union, Maine (Rt 17) and stopped at a place named after the famous Maine novel, the Come Spring Cafe. We stopped because we were running late and knew we would not make it to Rockland in time for lunch and there were a few truck/cars in the parking lot. The place was fairly busy with elderly ladies, moms with kids, etc. It was simple diner fare: breakfast, fried food, sandwiches and whatnot. I had eggs, toast and corned beef hash and my wife had a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich on thick whole wheat toast. We finished with a couple of slices of homemade pie, she had the blueberry and I had the raspberry. All this for $16.

We also ate at Lily Bistro and Shepherd’s Pie, but that’s all we had time for. It was a short trip. I mention this place because the pie was fantastic, the hash was tasty, eggs cooked perfect, etc. It was a solid meal and we were both full and happy. Really, I could not complain about one thing, Not so, the other two restaurants however.

I’ve already commented on Shepherd’s Pie (Rockport) in a previous post, so I won’t go into much detail except to say I had some issues with the intensity of flavors and tough pork belly.

Lily Bistro (Rockland) was pleasant, but they served some undercooked fries. They were flavorful--tossed in garlic/herb oil--but I hope they learn to double cook them. A tomato bisque that was too mild, but topped with a nice home made pesto. A pate that needed a bit more flavor other than the savory herbs mixed in it. Also had an Asian Chicken salad that also lacked flavor. Loved the place, the fantastic beer selection and servers, but the food, overall, lacked depth of flavor. Unlike Shepherd’s Pie, who seemed bold, brash and overly zealous, Lily Bistro was like an anemic sister, afraid to go near a pepper mill.

If I had to choose the best meal of the three places, I would honestly say the Come Spring Cafe won hands down.

Thumbs up on Come Spring Cafe -- great breakfast . No fancy here just good cooking. Lunch is pretty good as well. Another one of those hidden gems.
