Cetli, Tulum = Awesome

I poured over this board before our recent trip to Tulum and Cetli seemed to pop up on several reviews as one of the best...and the stellar reviews, in our opinion, were definitely well deserved. We ate there twice - the first night was one of the best dinning experiences we've ever had. It's the low season and Tulum was pretty quiet, so on a recent Sunday night we were the only people there. Chef Claudia was so gracious, talking to us throughout the meal....and what a meal it was! From the special assortment of complimentary appetizers (the green salsa was declared the winner by my husband, who practically licked the bowl), through dessert, every dish was both complex and simple...really stellar. I had chicken both nights. the first in a peanut mole and the second in a sweet tamarind sauce...both different but so so good. My husband couldn't pass up the shrimp with huitlacoch, black corn fungus. on the first night. He also had the house special. the stuffed poblano, the second night. I can't begin to do these dishes justice in my description - the flavors were so complex, yet you could taste the original recipe shining through...Claudia is a true chef. The best dessert I've ever had (and that includes many in Paris) was Claudia's Nanny's "Corn cake". A dense cake made of the best fresh corn, with spices I can't even describe, covered in a chocolate sauce. Oh my. And we had two wonderful Mexican wines - I felt so ignorant in not knowing that Mexico made such fine wines. All in all two memorable experiences. I hope that we get back there one day, and I hope that everyone who passed through Tulum will be able to take advantage of this wonderfully talented woman's cooking. Gracias Cetli!!

  1. Pretty neat second photo - considering that neither shrimp nor huitlacoche are local in Q. Roo, that's hard to do.
