Les Délices de l’ile Maurice Restaurant: Horrid experience
I was walking in the neighborhood at lunch and decided “hey, here’s somewhere I’ve never been”. Well, I wish I’d kept walking. It was lunchtime, and the restaurant was empty, not a good sign.
Sat down and ordered Calamar, and my friend ordered Noodles with Chicken. The appetizers and soup were incredible, the fried cabbage was a real treat, and the soup was spicy, homemade and satisfied absolutely.
Where could this go wrong?
Well, the main dishes came and my Calamari tasted more like old shoes, and had a horrific consistency. I sent it back. My dining mate dove into her noodles and chicken, and it had zero taste. The owner charged me FULL PRICE for two meals that were inedible, and appeared to become extremely agitated.
Needless to say I’d never eat there, nor would I recommend it to anyone.

Empty if open for more than a year is not a good sign. If they just opened a few month ago, doesn't mean nothing they just need to be discovered.
So what and where is this place? Otherwise I don't see the purpose of this thread.

I know Les D'elices had some rave reviews awhile back. Sylvester made some good eats for cheap and it was BYOB. I think one of the big draws (for most) was value.
For us, it was more Sylvester himself. We saw him kick people out for just changing tables or for complaining about prices. We saw him "close" the place at 10:00pm and serve free drinks. We saw him happy as ever and mad as hell. Watched as he quit the kitchen to sit down with a salad bowl of candy and watch TV. Listened to stories of his trips to Dominican Republic and his take on the world (which isn't quite your run-of-the-mill world view either - hehe).
Since he left, we haven't had much of an urge to go.

Les Delices de l<ile Maurice went downhill after Sylvester, the colorfull ex-owner left. However, it is a very popular restaurent at dinner time. I don't think I have ever seen it empty. Squid that tastes like old shoes is not acceptable, but I think you are being a bit too harsh on the Verdun restaurant scene. There are a lot of wonderful places in the area (Mas Cuisine, Su, la Taza, Cha Noir, several chinese places...). I agree that some places are pretty bad, but if you do a search for Verdun on this site you will find lots of suggestions for places to try.
