Coming to NYC next weekend, student budget, big appetite.
Hi All,
My gf and I are coming up to NYC from Philly next weekend for the Le Fooding Pop Up and just wanted to run by a couple of ideas by you guys to maximize our time in Manhattan.
Will be getting into town early Saturday, staying at the Hotel Chandler. Will probably drop out stuff off at the hotel and walk around a little, and would love a super fast, good lunchy somewhere in the Empire State Building Area or thereabouts.
Saturday Night-Why not?. Going down to Torrisi around 5 to stand in line to try for the first seating. If that falls through, I have a backup reservation at Aldea.
Saturday Night Drinks-Want to get to one cocktail bar, was thinking about PDT because it is so unique as to what we have in Philly, then any other bar recommendations are welcome and appreciated.
Sunday Brunch- Meeting a friend at the Bridle Room.
Sunday Lunchish- Maybe another quick stop somewhere for something to hold us over until the 9 pm Le Fooding dinner
Sunday Evening-Meeting more friends for drinks somewhere in Midtown East- Any suggestions?
Sunday Night- Massimo Bottura Pop Up
Any help in filling in those blanks with budget in mind would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I am really looking forward to our stay.

I'd go with Death and Co. instead of PDT personally because their drinks seem better to me. On the other hand, I like that PDT has those hot dogs from next door you can order... If you can't get into PDT, you can just walk to Death and Co., they're pretty close to each other. Also, Angels Share is pretty good. You have to go upstairs and walk through the restaurant and enter the door on the left. The Japanese barman might look angry when you order, but that's his style and he makes a good drink. On Sunday, I'd say you should go sit at the bar and have some munchies at Prune. It's pretty relaxing on Sunday evenings, and if you go on the early side you can just sit at the bar and drink (try their Bloody Mary-it's AMAZING!) all you want. If you want to go earlier however, keep in mind they close around 3:30 for an hour or so to set up dinner (if you get there right before 3:30, they'll let you in and you won't have to wait to sit).
The only place I can think of in Midtown East that is cool is Sakagura, which is underground (you have to enter through an office building and then go down the staircase to your left). People also come here to eat, but I've been to the bar just to drink great sake. Call them ahead of time to see how busy they are. If that's not what you're into, you can always go to Grand Central....you have Michael Jordan's, Cipriani and the Oyster Bar, to name a few.-----

Thinking about saving PDT for early Sunday before Le Fooding. Are the other cocktail bars easier to get into on a Sat night? Any other just cool and fun bars, lounges, etc to hit on Saturday night? Nothing too fancy. Maybe the spot atop Eately?
Also, any recs on a great, authentic NYC jewish deli that isn't too touristy?
And lastly, Ma Peche a good idea for lunch? Thanks!!

I had a very good lunch at Ma Peche sometime this summer. I would recommend it.
Like another poster suggested, K-Town is right by Empire State Building and would be a good place to grab something quick if you like Korean food - Philly is definitely lacking in that area as far as I know.

Death & Co may be marginally easier. I've definitely done Mayahuel on a weekend night and gotten in around 7ish, 8. Probably because not everybody wants an all tequila and mezcal place. It's also much bigger than PDT and Death & Co.
Little Branch and Pegu Club might be OK--the trade off being lack of seating and crowdedness. PDT, Death & Co, and Mayahuel don't allow standing. Little Branch and Pegu Club do.

Being that we plan to be at Torrisi's for 5, eating at 6. Then probably back to the hotel and back out at night, is it even worth a shot to get into PDT at night? Wouldn't mind going around for a drink while we wait, but just wanted to see how hard it it to get in.
Also, San Gennaro is going on right now in Little Italy, correct? Will that affect our Torrisi plan?

re: Gorp512
I've never tried Torrisi during Gennaro sorry! If you're getting there at 5pm to stand in line, you should still be OK though.
It'll be hard to get into PDT on a Saturday night. If you can, try to call at 3pm to make a reservation for a table that night. You might get lucky. Otherwise, I've had the most success just showing up early and grabbing two bar stools. But that conflicts with your Torrisi plan.

Showing at 5pm at Torrisi sounds like a good plan -- basically guaranteeing you a spot.

Saturday night drinks -- in Philly don't you have Franklin Investment & Mortgage Company? It's essentially a sister bar to our Death & Company. If you are dying for PDT, just get there right at 6pm and ask for two bar seats.
If you strike out there, there are 8-10 of similar mixology type bars nearby, including Death & Co, Vandaag, Mayahuel, The Beagle, Amor y Amargo, Cienfuegos, El Cobre, Peels, etc:

What's your price range for food only? $20pp? $25pp? Any neighborhood? Cuisine type preferred?

re: kathryn
Thanks so much. We love the Franklin here. Just looking for one cocktail centric spot and thanks for the list. I am sure I could find something on there. Any type of cuisine will be great for lunch for around 20-30 per person for food. Would also not be opposed to hitting Katz' or a food truck. Just something quick that will be memorable. Thanks again!!
